Does the sign in that pic say $3.00 Lesson Games? What a bargain! posted by amyms at 7:04 PM on August 9, 2007
From some more recent information, it appears he is back in New Orleans (see bottom of thread).
Fantastic post, by the way. Jude Acers has never gotten the credit that some others did outside of the cult of real players. Also interesting was his crusade of playing in prisons and bringing the game to minorities and the less fortunate.
No... it says $5.00 Lesson Games. posted by Poolio at 7:06 PM on August 9, 2007
Nooo!!!! $5!!!! What do you take him for? :)
Yes, he plays for $5. He didn't really cooperate for my photo, as you can tell. I tried to chat with him but he basically told me that if I wanted to know anything about him, to Google his name. So here we are. posted by The Deej at 7:08 PM on August 9, 2007 [1 favorite]
And, ashamedly, I had no clue who he was when I happened upon him in New Orleans. posted by The Deej at 7:10 PM on August 9, 2007
Good post The Deej. If you're interested, here is more information about Paul Morphy - mentioned in your first link. posted by tellurian at 7:14 PM on August 9, 2007
If being dead gets you a period, does having been in prison get you one of these?

Hey, i get it - prison = rape = funny!!! You're totally right about rape (and prison rape in particular) being more hilarious than a lubed-up barrel of raping monkeys. Good show, my man. Good show. posted by Item at 7:26 PM on August 9, 2007 [15 favorites]
Good show, my man. Good show.
Thank you. I'll be here all week.

Fuck the veal, and if you'd really wanted to win over the masses with an ASCII rape joke, it should've been this: 8====D * posted by Item at 7:31 PM on August 9, 2007

He's a populist, anti-racist chess master, and that's way cool.
""The U.S. Championship has never had a black person or a woman in it," Jude claims. "Therefore, the U.S. Chess Federation is dead. They mean well, but the fact that in 50 years they have not included ... black people, women, Asians and so on, dooms them."
That red beret, though, he needs to rethink that. posted by flapjax at midnite at 9:47 PM on August 9, 2007

the deej, in hindsight, perhaps the prison gambit was an ill-advised opening. But I applaud the disposition of your board. posted by mwhybark at 10:06 PM on August 9, 2007
But he has a cool reason for wearing it: Jude explains it simply: “The beret is red. Red in traffic means stop, so people walk past my boards and stop to play.” (from the "My Dinner With Jude Acers" article) posted by amyms at 10:20 PM on August 9, 2007
It's more common than you might think. But it is strange how, if "prison" is mentioned in a MetaFilter post, a comment about "rape" is never far behind. I blame Oz. posted by KokuRyu at 11:16 PM on August 9, 2007

This was true at the time the article at the final link was written, in 2001. It is no longer true, in either respect.
Yeah, if you taught inmates Go instead, I bet behavior would improve markedly.
That's absurd. Everyone knows Go players are serious badasses. posted by delmoi at 5:48 AM on August 10, 2007
I have also gone to prison to play chess (disclaimer: I'm in the article) and highly recommend it. It is a little scary, but the inmates really appreciate outsiders coming in to play. So far, they've always let me out at the end of the day. posted by MtDewd at 5:49 AM on August 10, 2007
amyms: they're actually talking about other people's weiners.
Which should answer your question. posted by Leon at 7:41 AM on August 10, 2007

Not to derail too much, but speaking of that can anyone explain why there is a separate women's championship for chess? It seems strange for such a purely mental activity. posted by whir at 5:54 PM on August 10, 2007
