Two institutions for which I have tremendous respect:
Indian Council of Forestry Research & Education in Dehra Dun (in the foothills of the Himalayas in North India).

and

The Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, also in Dehra Dun.

There is also the "Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational SciencES (ARIES) is an autonomous institute devoted to research and development in Astronomy & Astrophysics and Atmospheric sciences", in Nainital.
