The reason Flash,

The reason Flash, and quite possibly the Internet itself, was created. It's got a single brief AYBABTU reference, but apart from that, it's pure, random, lunatic genius.

That movie is freakin funny and I don't know why.

That's all well and good, but I wish someone would point me to a video of a kid telling a cop to fuck off. Now THAT'S humor.

My friend who speaks Japanese tells me that "hyakugojyuuichi" means 151.

And a translation of the song by her yields:

"Still still there must be more fun stuff to do / 151 fun things / 151 dreams / Its better to have lots of friends / I remember meeting all of you / We've hurt before but its okay / Somewhere there are more friends / 151 fun things / 151 dreams / 151 memories"

Or something like that.

Sweet baby jesus, I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight.

I knew the lyrics went something like that.

Wow. I know I'm gonna need 151 fun things to get to sleep tonight, that's for sure.

That's great, someone cut and pasted other people's images together. The web as paper, scissors, and glue. How genius. How great. How clever. Oh, that made me laugh. Oh. Oh. Oh.

OK, so I easily discerned the "random" and the "lunatic" parts, and I'm willing to take your word for it on "pure." I'm having more than a little trouble accepting the "genius" part - lame self-referential Internet "memes," tired pop culture images, "Wow, isn't Japanese a funny language?!" jingle-pop soundtracks and numbingly repetitive animation sequences don't add up to "genius," they add up to "learning some basic Flash operations doesn't make you a motion picture director, it makes you someone who knows some basic Flash operations."

Well, I refuse to feel stupid or like less of a person because I think this is funny. Funny is unquantifiable.
posted by toddshot at 4:48 AM on April 5, 2001

And yes, I was being a little facetious on the 'genius' part. But frankly, I think that anyone who has a mind that can assemble images and sounds in the way that this person has done is pretty talented.

And also, I think that once you start to analyze it too much, it dies, as does all humor, funny and un-funny.

Who's the sun-dude? Also, there's no way to download a Flash thing, I take it?

Paris: as aaron said (he's psychic I tells ya, psychic!) it's Colin Mochrie, whom you may recognize from Who's Line Is It Anyway?

That was funny. Funny's funny, and this was funny.

This is what it is all about friends....wackiness. I expect that by the end of the day I will have the song memorized. A catchy tune.

Ohh yeah, argue the merits of flash with something like that. I personally liked the real people that used to do wacky html for the specific reason of it being wacky way back then. These people are 'poeseurs'.

Cute, but it's no Tunak Tunak Tun.
posted by briank at 6:46 AM on April 5, 2001

It says "hyakugojyuuichi" and just sits there. Why doesn't the animation start? I feel cheated. (Yes, Flash works fine for me on myriad oher annoying pages.)

Tunak really should get best rock video of the year...
posted by muppetboy at 10:26 AM on April 5, 2001

It's no Tunak, but Tunak's just pure, contagious joy bundled up into a nice little musical act. This is pure, contagious stupidity bundled up into a nice little musical act, and it's hi-larious.

It's been bookmarked in my "Anti-agression" folder, right next to Tunak.

Could someone provide a link to TunaK?

Paris, Tunak Tunak Tun was a big hit here a couple months ago.

Hmmm... If it's even better than this Japanese creation, I can't wait for Tunak. But, any advice for the Pathetic Modem Crowd? It doesn't seem to play in my Realplayer: at least from my office (small law office with only a 56K), my modem gets me nowhere with the Tunak video. Is there someway to download it and then play it? By the way, isn't it now possible to watch RealPlayer-encoded videos through a Quicktime Player? This advice might be useful in the future.

Copies available various places, such as this StileProject page. (Standard disclaimer about StileProject not being a work-safe link applies, what with the pr0n banner ads and all.)

Now Harry Potter will be even more offended, being framed by porno ads.

Say, upon third listen, that music sounds like a Japanese rip-off of the Beatles' Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da.
