Oh wow, I can't believe they covered "Spanish Dance Troupe" by Gorky's Zygotic Mynci! I love everything GZM have ever produced, but they aren't exactly the most well known of bands, so it's awesome to see that they have some fans in Of Montreal. posted by afx237vi at 1:47 PM on February 1, 2008
Doing "Back to School" from Royal Trux is a left-field move, but it's a good cover. Nice job. posted by porn in the woods at 1:57 PM on February 1, 2008
That Eno cover is fucking brilliant. And yes, his voice is perfect for it. posted by maudlin at 2:16 PM on February 1, 2008
Excellent choice of Who, Kinks, Beatles and Velvets covers. Nice harmonies, and good singing on the high notes. These Canadian children have nothing to be ashamed of. posted by Faze at 2:21 PM on February 1, 2008
FYI the 3 I've tried so far are rather sketchy quality.
I've DownedTheMall! and am working my way through the lot. The collection so far seems to be about 70/30 live recordings (with about half of those being 3rd party bootlegs)/studio work.
You'll go blind doing that, carsonb. And then who the hell would bring us these links, eh? posted by maudlin at 2:27 PM on February 1, 2008
One summer day in 2006 fate smiled on me. I got a press pass to LA's Detour festival while trying to buy a ticket at the door, and it allowed me to hang out in the pit under the stage and get some quality pictures of Of Montreal.
Also, they rocked it. Great post. posted by mullingitover at 2:28 PM on February 1, 2008

That commercial fills me with the rage. It'd be the one thing if they'd just licensed the song as is, but no—they had to change the lyrics too. Ugh.
On the other hand, how cool is it that Of Montreal's record label is pimping links to sharity blogs filled with their good music? posted by carsonb at 3:46 PM on February 1, 2008
Great post. I need to make time to explore these. Thanks. posted by bardic at 4:54 PM on February 1, 2008
I thought you were talking about Montreal by Autechre there for a sec, haha. But no. posted by snoktruix at 5:01 PM on February 1, 2008

If the naming origin stories are true, he's slightly ashamed regretful that he didn't get to have half-Canadian children. posted by CKmtl at 5:01 PM on February 1, 2008
Thanks! Here is some more great music, many live recordings, by them and other bands from Elephant Six collective, including the best band ever neutral milk hotel. posted by dnial at 5:10 PM on February 1, 2008

I was excited to see that Of Montreal covered Os Mutantes' Bat Macumba. It is too bad, however, that their version doesn't reproduce one of the main things that makes the song so great.
The original lyrics create bat wings on the written page by removing a syllable at a time with each repetition so that the sentence roughly translated as "play those afro-brazilian religious drums to bring on spirit possession" morphs into "Batman" and then back again. It creates all these unexpected phrase lengths throughout the song. posted by umbú at 7:54 PM on February 1, 2008

YANP's been one of my favorite music blogs for quite some time. This is about the only thing he could post that'd top the Girl Talk set from Bonnaroo, in my mind.
Um. Until the next time he posts something super awesome. posted by sparkletone at 10:38 PM on February 1, 2008
Awesome. And great covers.
The only thing more I could want was Steely Dan's "Dr.Woo." but I'll take the Buzzcocks and Big Star to hold me over. posted by From Bklyn at 8:13 AM on February 2, 2008
