You know what I really liked about that? The way the author of this curious little tale kept losing me. But not in that way where you say "fuck it" and stop. In that way that carries the adventure along. This little picture story has the logic of a dream, and getting that kind of logic across is no mean feat. Kudos to the creator.

The writing on the toilet paper reminds me of a story. When I was a little kid, still newly fascinated by the idea of using letters and words to communicate, I decided to take a Sharpie and write a message on one of the toilet paper squares (like in the photo sequence) for the next person to read. Unfortunately I used the wall as a writing surface, and, of course, the Sharpie bled right through the thin paper. The words "Remember to wipe your butt" remained imprinted on the wall for a long time afterwards.

I gather there's some sort of game going on at the moment. Perhaps you folks should go and watch it. There will be two groups of men throwing some sort of ball, running with it, probably slamming into one another from time to time. At the end there will be a score, the victor proclaimed. It will all be very clear, its meaning entirely discernible: the number, at the end of the game. This number will more than likely appear in tomorrow's newspaper.

And surrealist picture stories that do not follow the rules of linear development that one observes in a sports event? You'd probably do better to ignore those, as they obviously do not speak to you in any meaningful way.

Damn. Just when I thought I could put my understanding of postmodernism to good use, it's a SA thingy. I hate when I feel like I'm getting something on a deep, deep level, and then discovering the artist just meant to be random. Kind of like how the show Lost feels sometimes.

Hey, often when an artist just means to be random, the resulting work can be deep! If it's a good artist, that is. But anyway, whatever the artist means or doesn't mean is unimportant: an artist's intent is basically irrelevant. What's important is each individual's interpretation of the work.

That's my humble opinion, anyway.

Okay, we're probably not supposed to make sense of it in any important way (and I didn't click through to SA), but bear with me and help fill in this here hypothetical film-influence chain (we SHALL impose meaning!):

The beginning, up to the knife, is like Memento

possible knifey missing step

The being that is born from his abdomen is like Alien

missing step in which an (unnatural?) creature goes from innocent to dissolute

The cutting off the leg is like Misery

missing step involving chopped up pieces

The just-add-water (and, later, cute-things-become-evil) is like Gremlins?

missing step(s) re: door in the wall and forest scene

The little-devils-surround-him is like Village of the Damned (you know? scary little kids with big blue eyes?)

... aaaaand I'm lost. Forest reanimation something? Key? Something in which the villain absorbs the souls of his victims (the scene with all the little faces on cut-out-guy)? ... something with a clock (or time)? And who are the teeny men?

Obviously, I'm not really that up on my horror/suspense films... Take it, film buffs!

Here's my [insomnia-fueled] interpretation:

It starts out with a bachelor figure, going about his quotidian existence (washroom, coffee, internet) and getting the overwhelming feeling that this day would be special, today he'd meet the love of his dreams. He does meet a woman and she takes his heart, which he willingly gives to her. Shown by him cutting out the center of himself, which becomes the woman as his significant other, a kind of reverse-consummation (also note phallic imagery). After sex we see her smoking a cigarette around the open bottles of alcohol, which no doubt led to their romantic tryst. They go to sleep, maybe in the same bed, but worlds apart. She's relatively unaffected by his existence, and he aches with that knowledge. As she parts from his life, an even further piece of him is gone, given to her. It leaves him a crippled shell of a man.

She wakes up from that part of her life, and finds that she's pregnant (the little pieces representing his sperm.) Just add water (Gremlins reference), and inevitably some children are born. She is touched and awed by their presence. She cares for them, sleeps alongside them. Eventually they grow up and leave her and their little bookshelf world for bigger horizons. Again she sleeps, much more alone in the world. The man is long gone from her life, but she's missing him. He's adrift, lost in the forest. He doesn't even know his children.

Time passes. Her children grow up into adults, and ungratefully turn against her. She dies from the pain and loneliness. Her last words were for the man gone from her life: "Come back." She realized how much he meant to her, how much she should have let him into her life. The man, adrift in the forest, learns of her death and comes back and meets his children at her funeral. Those children may be adults now, but they are still just fragments, little pieces. He holds the key to their understanding of who they are. He reconciles with them and makes them whole beings. Fulfilled, they move on to their own lives.

But the man, alone and without the woman he loves, remains a mere hollow shell. He tries for the rest of his days to fill up that missing center of his life, in vain.
