You have to wonder if God is hoping we drive ourselves to extinction before we take the dolphins out with us. posted by Joe Beese at 7:34 PM on December 17, 2008
The camera and the remains of the boat were found later on an island nearby. Beside the corpses, someone--or something--had scrawled, "Jump through your own fucking hoops." posted by shadytrees at 8:15 PM on December 17, 2008 [3 favorites has favorites]
I wonder what our grandkids will think as they watch these old youtube videos and marvel at what used to live on our planet. posted by maxwelton at 8:16 PM on December 17, 2008 [6 favorites has favorites]
Amazing - I saw something very similar in a small fishing boat in that exact spot in the Sea of Cortez, 11 years ago. I wonder if it's some of the same animals. posted by Pantengliopoli at 8:43 PM on December 17, 2008
I've been swimming with wild dolphins in Hawaii. Marvelous experience. If you get the chance you should try it, but do it soon; the U.S. government plans to pretty much outlaw this soon. Turns out that running a motor boat into the middle of a pod of dolphins may have harmful consequences for them. posted by twoleftfeet at 8:47 PM on December 17, 2008
Salmon fishing off Santa Barbara I saw one of those times ten, must have been a few thousand of them, an absolute dolphin storm. Watching an adult and offspring jumping right next to each other was beautiful. posted by Iron Rat at 8:59 PM on December 17, 2008

I thought the textures were pretty realistic, but obviously the water splashes were there to obscure any imperfections in the 3D wireframes, as was the entire shaky base video. So when is this Cetaceous Park coming out? posted by dhartung at 9:15 PM on December 17, 2008 [1 favorite has favorites]
Damn Dolphin camwhores.

Though more seriously, I've been in such swarms several times in Haida Gwaii -- on one occasion we estimated 500 dolphins travelling together. There were experienced marine mammal types on board so this is not some wild guess.
There's a place up there we go fishing for halibut, and on the run out to the fishing bank we very often see a smaller pod of dolphins, say a dozen or so, and they will ride our bow wave and generally gambol around. If you lie on the foredeck with your fingers trailing in the water they will come and rub against your fingers and roll on their sides and give you a big eyeful of curiosity. posted by Rumple at 9:52 PM on December 17, 2008 [1 favorite has favorites]

A lot nearer to many of you I encountered a similar event.
I was at the helm around 6:oo am. heading due east from N.J. (Brielle)
Five of us were making our weekly trip to the Hudson canyon 100+ miles offshore for some sport fishing.
The other four guys were snoozing below while I was on the fly bridge helm running on auto fighting to keep my eyes open.
In the dawns meager light I slowly became aware that I was surrounded by hundreds of frolicking porpoises.
We were used to them, a dozen or so, competing to ride our bow wave on occasion. But this morning there were porpoises frolicking and running with us 200 yards in every direction. We could not do justice to an estimate of the numbers. It was the most amazing thing. The word awesome was fitting. A one time event for us. We never witnessed it again.
Back at the dock Sunday night an old timer said he had seen it once in his lifetime.

I've seen dolphins in the wild on occasion, and the first half of the video, I was like 'Oh, that'd be neat to see live, I guess'. The second half the video, I was like 'Holy fucking hell!' posted by jacquilynne at 9:11 AM on December 19, 2008
