Is this something I'd have to have a band to understand? posted by schyler523 at 8:25 AM on February 22, 2009
Actually what would be really fun would be a site that presents an album cover and makes the visitor guess whether it was one of these randomly generated ones or a real one (from a pool of obscure crappy unknown bands obviously) in the kittenwar/hotornot/guessmyage style. posted by Rhomboid at 8:37 AM on February 22, 2009 [5 favorites]

I don't really know why, but this is the only dumb meme thing I've done in years, and it works terrifically and it's a blast. I think maybe because I never have an excuse to just make something fun, anymore. Yeah, I did this yesterday, and ended up with a defiant little girl's portrait on the cover of Don't Break the Heart that Loves You's new album Then You Counterattack. So I'm pretty emo. posted by Bookhouse at 8:50 AM on February 22, 2009 [2 favorites]
Also, you people who aren't actually making album covers, and just linking to pictures: you're doing it wrong. Make a goddamn album cover. If you don't have Photoshop, use this. It doesn't bite. posted by Super Hans at 8:50 AM on February 22, 2009 [4 favorites]
I didn't have time for this, but couldn't stop myself. It's amazing how many look really good, and sound so meaningful. Here's mine. posted by cccorlew at 8:56 AM on February 22, 2009 [2 favorites]

I did this meme a year or so ago when it was floating around LiveJournal. It was so much fun I did it twice. I'd complain about MeFi recycling ages-old LJ memes, except that this one is actually genuinely kind of fun.
yes I have a livejournal because I am secretly a goth emo fanfic-writing preeteen cosplay girl. The grumpy software developer I portray here is just a kaycee-style front I haven't figured out how to monetize yet. posted by ook at 9:04 AM on February 22, 2009

Wouldn't that be using someone else's material without their permission?
Right, this is the first one of these idiocies I tried to partake in, and the random Wikipedia link for the band name is a band already. I give up. posted by phax at 9:44 AM on February 22, 2009
This got forwarded to me a month ago on Facebook. I made my first attempt then I have to say that an album called Drawing the Line Someplace by Doomsday List actually does sound much better than a couple of albums I have played on.
And rhomboid speaks sooth here:
Actually what would be really fun would be a site that presents an album cover and makes the visitor guess whether it was one of these randomly generated ones or a real one (from a pool of obscure crappy unknown bands obviously) in the kittenwar/hotornot/guessmyage style.
quarsan, the pithy critical histories of your album covers are fucking hilarious. Thanks for making me laugh this morning. posted by jokeefe at 10:47 AM on February 22, 2009

Presenting, Camptogramma - Some in StormCamptogramma is a genus of a moth family, the album title is from a quote from an American novelist and a well-taken picture of homeliness. I'm thinking the genre is post-industrial rock, interspersing African sounds and a sprinkling of French lyrics with a rock bass.

The Whelk, you'd have to live in Cumbria to realise how tragically funny that concept it. Barrow was once described as ' the longest cul-de-sac in the world' and they're so backward, they're still paying Danegeld.
Its the home of Vickers who build nuclear submarines. I knew a guy there, who told me about one of the Trident subs they were building. It wans't going well at all and all the hull panels needed a lot of fining work to make them fit. Eventually someone realised....
The plans were upside down.

As fun as it is, it really bugs me that the meme as spreading completely ignores copyright -- there's a _lot_ of really creative work being done that gives no credit to the photographers whose images are being appropriated.
When I did mine a year ago on the first incarnation, I tweaked the rules a bit to search through Creative Commons licensed photos. Unfortunately, my 'net presence isn't big enough to have influenced more than two or three people. posted by djwudi at 1:41 PM on February 23, 2009
Dobre Delo's second album, "Paradise Is Paradise Lost", is a massive step sideways from the synthetic aggression of the band's first album, which should delight new listeners and dismay the loyalists. On the title track, Eduard K. and his quartet produce a richer, more orchestral representation of his repentalist style than can be found anywhere else in the genre. Some might yearn for the less refined tones of Eduard's earlier works; "Paradise" is a sign that they will not soon be returning. posted by fleacircus at 1:54 PM on February 23, 2009
