National Running Day
June 3, 2009 9:48 AM   Subscribe

Today is the first National Running Day in the US, with events taking place in metropolises like Boston, Chicago, New York, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Houston, as well as smaller communities like Chautauqua, New York. If you're not comfortable with running, you can try the Run Walk method, or start your Couch to 5k schedule. If you're already a runner, you may want to think up some creative ways to make today even more running-y. [Previously: no fancy shoes necessary]

If running isn't your thing or you're looking for another fitness goal, you can start working towards one hundred push ups, train for a "century" bike ride (100 miles), or swim the English Channel.

I like running but running hates me - ow my back. Everyone should try it though. A 5K is more doable than you think.

This is a perfect time to get into MetaFilter's June running challenge at Runner+. See if you can catch thawed, May's winner.

And if you're looking for some music to motivate (and time) your Couch to 5k efforts: there are podcasts a-plenty, or you can make your own.

I would love to get in on the Runner+ challenge because I have been lazy as hell for the last month or so.

But I blame that on the baby.

Soon as the doc gives my wife the go-ahead she'll be out running again, and once I have my training partner back I'll be off my butt and on my feet more often. (Of course until the kid is old enough we can't really just throw him in the jogging stroller and take off, can we? How young is too young?)

caution live frogs: I think the recommendation is to hold off on jogging strollers until the baby can support his head completely.

Yay, I'm going for a run tonight.

Note that in May's challenge, we discovered that thawed is a Terminator!

Why the heck would they have this on a Wednesday? Every running thing I've ever been involved with was on a Saturday.

Well I didn't know about the day but I did my 5.7 miles on the treadmill this morning. I've been doing an hour of running four times a week for the last three months and have lost about eighteen pounds. It's the only thing that loses weight for me.

Whoa, I totally did not know about this, but did a 3 mile run today - my first since high school. I'm as slow as ever, but hey, I made it!
