Does anyone know how common it is for big Russian military equipment to be given religious names? I would think that most of the people in charge are still of the Atheistic Soviet mindset... so I'm surprised that St. Nick is being honored in this way. posted by brenton at 7:18 PM on September 20
I don't know about that, brenton, but apparently the Russian Orthodox Church has made a big comeback in the Putin era. From what I've read, there's apparently a tacit alliance between the bigwigs in the respective institutions of church and state. In that context, this doesn't really seem surprising. posted by Rangeboy at 7:24 PM on September 20
A nuclear strike obsessed pro-Russian blog. Im getting sick of the Russian attitude that all wars will now be considered nuclear wars, thus all the problems Russia has with their military compared to the West's is trivial. Sorry guys, but your aging military and a decade of R&D lost while trying to figure out an economic system that works really hurts you. posted by damn dirty ape at 9:00 PM on September 20
brenton: With the breakdown of soviet moral system and onset of crime, cynical worldview, breakdown of customs -- there is a search for a new moral system, the latest news is that there will be a "morality studies" class that either will go over four major religions - xianity, islam, judaism and (yay!) buddhism, or each particular class will choose one of them to study.. I'm not too sure on the details. posted by rainy at 11:07 PM on September 20
