I was expecting this to be some kind of bizarre NES/chiptune rendering of Zappa tunes while a pink balloonman ate stuff.

This is actually much better than that. Kudos!

I dunno, that'd be nothing to sneeze at.

I thought this was the post constructed exactly for me! Then I saw it was not that Kirby.

More pink, damnit!

Zappa was asked to write the music for STAR WARS? I find that a little hard to believe.

Best of the web, indeed!

Hah! I always suspected Darth Vader of being a Dr. Doom derivative. Never made the New Gods' Source/Force connection, though.

For my part, this story is just one more iteration of a pattern where every new thing I learn about Jack Kirby just makes him even more super-fucking-awesome. The guy had an uncanny ability to be awesome.

Hah! I always thought the Force was a complete rip-off of the Source. Never made the Darth Vader/Dr. Doom connection, though.

(Thanks for posting this. Did you ever get the feeling all the cool people in the 60s knew each other?)

Am I the only one who sees the series of spam links at the top of that page?

Bron: Don't know about the 60s, but it seems to be true now. They Might Be Giants seems to be the center of the Universe Of Awesome at the moment.

They played thecurrent theme music for The Daily Show, The Drinky Crow Show, have worked with the Brothers Chaps of Homestar Runner. John Hodgman is a semi-regular on the Daily Show. Jonathan Coulton hangs out with Hodgman and sometimes tours with him, and also was a co-performer on the audiobook of The Areas of My Expertise. Coulton has performed with the Rifftrax guys. Mike Nelson of Rifftrax did one with Weird Al. It just goes on from there.

According to the conceptual continuity cookbook, "Zappa + Kirby" is the recipe for a gypsy mutant industrial vacuum cleaner.

Both these guys blew my mind in my formative years, now it's blown again. Best of the web.
