I think there's a big difference between the hipsters and actually being hip, just as there's a world of difference between hipster and geek. Bein' geeky is about doing stuff because you think it's fun or cool. There may be some irony involved, but it usually takes a distant backseat position to enjoying yourself.

No such distinction in the original sense.
Main Entry: hip·ster
Pronunciation: \ˈhip-stər\
Function: noun
Etymology: 4hip
Date: 1940
: a person who is unusually aware of and interested in new and unconventional patterns (as in jazz or fashion)
But true, Don is a man of his time, not cutting edge.
Also: loved that chicks-with-stormtroopers video.

I think that most hipsters secretly genuinely enjoy what they're doing/wearing, but pretend to be doing it ironically because they are afraid of being rejected.
Geeks, on the other hand, tend to build up metaphorical callouses that make them seem sort of clueless to people who aren't geeks themselves.

Good grief, Don is totally square (all the more because of his identity conflict). Midge and her pals, now.... Remember how uncomfortable he was at the poetry/music thing? And telling off the guy he figured Midge was in love with? "Neither will buying some Tokai wine and leaning up against a wall in Grand Central pretending you’re a vagrant." Now that's hipster.

True Stories of the 'Core Marvel Universe':
In the Core Marvel Universe, a man who got his powers from the wizard Merlin and fought vampires that were shot out of a cannon on the moon by Dracula (who came to earth in a magic pirate ship), has a twin sister who was kidnapped by an interdimensional television executive and later had her mind transferred to the body of a Japanese assassin who could make a knife out of psychic powers.

As an aside, a cow-orker too issue with my use of the word "geek" and "nerd" when having a discussion about the local maker/crafter scene. He was surprised I was using such derogatory language toward a group I can't possibly be part of. It's like he was living in "The Breakfast Club."

From my point of view, "geek" & "wonk" are positive names; they just imply expertise. "Dork" too, but that just might be due to the local Dorkbot branch; I read it as "expertise but self-deprecating about how goofy the subject might be." "Nerd" might imply social ineptitude. "Dweeb" & "spaz" (obscure!) are negative, or at least they haven't been reappropriated yet, perhaps.
I'm a geek (comic book, computer, & others) and also a dork.
