"The great thing about life is every goddamned thing is funny. . . I'm having a nihilistic baby eating festival, I'm having a nihilistic baby eating festival..." Not old enough to by alcohol? Don't know any dealers? Just go to the store and by some cough medicine, start tripping, record yourself and post the clips on the web.... Here's an msnbc story about dextromethorphan abuse.

A lot of kids are doing Coricidin every day, Campanelli said. "They don’t realize they actually are killing their brains," he said.

There is no anti-drug claim more likely to make your teenager laugh at you than the "it's causing brain damage!" argument. The WoSD types have made this claim about every drug that's come down the pike in the last 70 or 80 years, and almost never has it proven true except with doses high enough to kill an average human outright anyway. Maybe ecstacy is a real brain damager, and I'm not even 100% convinced of that.

I just read in Discover that the changes that ecstacy makes in the brain are identical to those created over a longer term by Prozac. Not to go all offtopic or anything.

You might be right, but how does that explain the way many long-term dope smokers act?

You know the type. They've been smoking weed 10 times a day for the past 30 years. They can barely hold a conversation, and they just collapse around the place going 'yeah, man, life is so rad'. Just go to any music festival, and you'll meet a few.

Whether they're brain damaged or not, something aint right.

The worst thing about the DXM isnt the DXM... its the other stuff in the cough medicine, in particular acetaminophen, which causes severe liver damage at the doses used to "trip"...

hmm...

Benylin and Buckley's seems to be the purest source.

umm... if you're looking for that sort of thing.

I get annoyed with the brain damage claim as applied to some other drugs, but DXM is an exception. Of all the dumb things I used in the past, DXM was the only one which left me stuttering for a week with blurred vision. It's hard to believe such a laughable drug is dangerous; but if you've tried it, you know that it's like nothing else.

So also: Olney's lesions and the risk of death when combined with MAOI's.

there are other ways to get fudged with everyday household items.

how 'bout some ether?

go to a store that sells automotive supplies and go to the fuel additives section. pick up a can of a product that contains ether, such as "quick start". usually the product will contain ether and hepatane. to separate the ether, fill a large container half full of water and spray the product on to the water. let it sit for an hour or so and you will have a layer of pure ether on top of the water.

but jesus, be careful with that stuff. hunter s. thompson calls it "devil ether" for a reason.

The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge..."

ah hst, the real gateway drug.

Which is easy to get around when you take something that does not have acetaminophen. I take Robutussin when I am sick and I think it has DXM but not the other. I take NyQuil to go to sleep, which has both, but I take something else the rest of the time because I do not like taking that much of the acetaminophen despite the fact that it supposedly takes _huge_ amounts to cause the damage. Dayquil is demon spit anyway.

I know someone that wants to try datura. Now that's a great idea.

Now you've got me worried. It never occurred to me to separate the ether from the petrol stew. As a kid I spent a few months straight, with an evil old friend of mine, spraying the noxious starting fluid into bags late on cold winter nights and huffing it. Huffing it. Huffing it. It's so shameful!

Then came the panic attacks and other mood problems. I wonder? Anybody else ever notice the orange hue with its accompaniment vertical black diamonds?

...Buckley's seems to be the purest source.

Gah, but then you would have to drink some of it. Buckley's tastes like something you're not supposed to ingest.

I think the use of various OTC toxins to get high make a good case for drug legalization. If people could get pot easier, they might not huff household solvents, which I think are by far more dangerous.

And wackybrit, my experience with the burnouts you describe is that pot is not the only substance they have been ingesting in great quantity. Most people I know like that have been spun on LSD a few too many times. Besides, who's to say that level of existance is any worse than any other? Most people I know like that are pleasant, easily amused, and low stress individuals.

You get the real drooling idiots from too much gas-huffing/ cough medicine drinking.

I suspect that the problem with your "long-term dopers" is not that they've done too much chronic, but that they've done too little else of interest with their lives.

I've done it.... twice.

The last time was just last week. Robitussin Max Cough. Take two 4oz bottles worth, and just wait.

The first time I did it, I felt great for 4 hours then felt like pure shit for 2 more. I said I would never do it again...... Ha.

The second time I did it, the effects were more tame- probably because I knew what to expect. The thing that bothered me the most was the intense itching that I got on the second time - along with a nasty rash.

I would have to say that the 'trip' wasn't worth it - especially for the $10 i spent on it. Reading other peoples experiences dont make me want to do it again anytime soon.

The most important thing to remember if you're going to get your DXM from cough syrup is to make sure it doesn't have anything else in it: in quantities high enough to trip on, some of the additives can do really nasty things to you. Robotussin DM (or Max Strength or whatever they call it) is a good choice.

Also, as with all new drugs, start out small, with perhaps half of a 4 oz bottle if you're light, or a full 4 oz bottle if you have more body mass.

There is a good page with all sorts of information here It includes a FAQ with dosage information.

DXM is a dissociative, so if you have ever done Ketamine you'll know partially what to expect.

Not that I'm condoning, but if you're going to do drugs, be smart about it.

Those audio clips are truly sad. A far more effective way to make drug abuse look uncool than anything the government could come up with.

The most important thing to remember if you're going to do DXM is that it puts holes in your brain. This is not a joke, nor is it anti-drug propaganda. For fuck's sake, if you want vertigo, drink some beer. If you want euphoria, take some e. If you want to trip, find some mushrooms.
