On a related topic, there is some discussion on these here internets that in 2001, HAL makes a mistake in his chess game with Bowman that many film buffs believe foreshadows HAL's later error in detecting a fault in the AE35 antenna. Here is the discussion on wikipedia debating whether HAL made a mistake (thereby rendering Kubrick even more of a meticulous genius) or whether Kubrick made a mistake (thereby rendering him merely the greatest filmmaker of all time).
