Pluto is interesting as he not only has a rock steady style but is also a Calypsonian which is more Down Island.
He certainly is Calypsonian in his lyrical approach--I Man Bitter aside, the songs are all lighthearted and witty social commentary: Your Honour, I did not have sex with that woman--I was in the closet putting on my clothes, Ram Goat Liver is the Jamaican soul food viagra and I'll take Dat, the story of the Rasta with a secret taste for pork.
I Man Bitter is a bit darker slice of failed state life with its talk of picking up the gun and the army in the street. It came to mind yesterday and I Googled it and found a YouTube record player version and some background on what was a song I knew from 20 Reggae Disco Hits, an album I found in a cut out bin somewhere back in the 70s. It was quite the collection with cornball covers like Honey Boy's Guitar Man, Vaya Con Dios by the The Vaughns and Angel of the Morning by one Maureen Davis. Not to mention Roy Alton's Kung Fu International, which was a calypso twist on Carl Douglas's Kung Fu Fighting. It was a mixed bag, to be sure.
But, I Man Bitter, what an earworm.
And now I find that Pluto cut a version of Jambalaya--now there is a cover I wouldn't mind hearing once.
