“Star Wars: The Solo Adventures” (2D) Also: The Solo Adventures (3D). This is the winner of "Best Animation" from the Star Wars Fan Film Movie Challenge, sponsored by Lucasfilm. “Star Wars: The Solo Adventures” by Daniel L Smith tells the story of why Han Solo “Dropped his cargo at the first sign of an Imperial Cruiser”.

He should really post the '3D' version on youtube. The youtube player lets you select a bunch of different options for 3D viewing, including crosseyed mode, which is the easiest for me. As well as different modes for people with different hardware.

Pretty clever in a couple of places, and the ending got a laugh. Does "Best Animation" mean best animation in a technical sense, or that it was judged the best entry that happened to be animated?

I'd rather see more work by independent directors/animators. As much fun as Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series is, I'm tired of Lucas and his vision. Relinquish some control and we'd probably see some wonderful creativity in this universe.

Relinquish some control

This will happen when hell freezes over, I think, but sponsoring these sorts of contests is probably a good step in the right direction, anyway.

I love it when someone uses this universe in a creative way. If only George Lucas could do the same.

Always gives me ... I guess you'd call it a happy face palm ... To see indie projects showing more vim and vigor than anything Lucas could do himself.

At the risk of being ghoulish: who or what will have the reins to the Star Wars universe after Lucas passes away?

Lucas has no intention of "passing away"... You have no idea of the awesome power of the Dark Side of the Force.

My Star Wars 'Expanded Universe' consists exclusively of:
  1. Troops
  2. Stormtroopers' 9/11
  3. Robot Chicken's 'This deal's getting worse all the time' / 'Dinner with Vader'
  4. The Holiday Special; and now
  5. This
Excellent. Thanks for posting.

And emphatically not Ep I-III.

Stupid Vimeo, never works for me, probably due to their insistence on using the latest and greatest Flash "technology". Someone please post a Youtube link if you find it.

I don't really know what the deal is with Jar Jar Binks other than that he is hated by Star Wars fans for being too broad humor-wise

Well, aside from the racial accents which permeate Episode I, of which Jar Jar is an example, the way in which he is animated turns what was basically a rather real-universe-physics based setting into something nearly Warner Brothers animation-esque. The scene where he dives into the water is a pretty clear example of this happening. Plus, his presence seems to be there nearly entirely for slapstick and poo jokes to please "the kiddies", whereas there was very little pandering of that sort in the original trilogy, Ewoks aside.

I mean, I kind of get the point of the character -- a clumsy outcast manages to somehow play a distinct and valuable role in the larger fate of the galaxy far far away. But the way it was executed felt a bit too, um... untrue to the universe established by the first three films. It's not just about the broad humor, it signaled a fundamental shift in style which leaves a lot of old fans pretty cold.

This is cute and looks nice but there's not much here in terms of story or new ideas, is there? To claim that it's somehow more interesting that anything Lucas has done is pretty goofy.

Someone asked about getting their hands on the Phantom Edit a few days ago. I hadn't seen it and so I took a look via the YouTube link. Wow, even the Phantom Edit hurts to watch. Honestly, there should be a Phantom Edit Edit that dubs out Jar-Jar’s speech, adds non-"ex-squeeze me!" sub-titles, or just plain Poochie’s him away.
