Bored of Ke$ha, Fergie, and their various American contemporaries performing "hip-hop"-"tinged" "pop"? Say "alo" to apple-cheeked Romanian-German star Miss Platnum. Maybe start with Mercedes-Benz and She Moved In, before moving on to her earliest and biggest hit, Give Me the Food. Bonus: A cover of Kate Bush's Babooshka.
hyper cool. thanks. posted by - at 12:15 AM on December 4, 2010 [1 favorite]
Man, it takes a lot of guts to cover that Kate Bush song.

I love the 50/60/70 of Mercedes Benz. posted by Mblue at 12:24 AM on December 4, 2010
Nice, this is fun! She's cute too, like if the love child of Bjork and a young Dawn French had grown up to front her own collegiate ska-fusion band. posted by hincandenza at 12:24 AM on December 4, 2010 [4 favorites]
These are great! Never would have found her on my own, thanks eugenen! I'm rocking the style of the She Moved In video, and the change-up halfway through just makes it even better. Awesome. posted by snowleopard at 12:47 AM on December 4, 2010 [1 favorite]

I think it's amazing how English is the language that all over countries' pop stars sing in. The next time you hear a Republican spout out some shit about how 'In twenty years we're all going to be speaking Spanish!' because some DMV in Montana started offering their driving test in Espagnol, send them some Euro-Pop.
The first song, Mercedes Benz, was not good. There were obvious budget restrictions. The second song actually sounded good, and was a much better video. As for the third, well... posted by QueerAngel28 at 5:54 AM on December 4, 2010 [3 favorites]
The german part of the lyrics of Marry Me for those of you who, like me, need to read along to get the gist. Pretty good.
Not the kind of tedious bragging about Murcialago's etc that I associate with hip-hop.
Dein Vater kriegt 'n second hand Golf Coupé

Mmm... Selbtsgebranntem. My Romanian father-in-law brought some when he came to visit us last summer. posted by Slothrup at 6:33 AM on December 4, 2010
Wait, you say this person is Romanian-German and is singing at least partly in German? That's amazing because none of these videos are available in my country, and I am in Germany.
Major record labels: what the fuck?
Anyway, I managed to find some of her songs and they're fun. Thanks for the tip! posted by sixohsix at 8:07 AM on December 4, 2010 [5 favorites]
It *almost* sounds like what would happen if she didn't speak any english at all and was just singing phonetically. Especially in Mercedes Benz. posted by gjc at 8:08 AM on December 4, 2010
I really wasn't terribly impressed by the Mercedes Benz song, but Give Me the Food was a treat. posted by Edgewise at 8:11 AM on December 4, 2010
These are remarkably well produced. posted by empath at 8:13 AM on December 4, 2010
Oh, just caught Babooshka...I'm not familiar with the original, but that song, performance and video were all significantly more impressive than Give Me the Food. posted by Edgewise at 8:17 AM on December 4, 2010
This is seriously rad. Thanks for sharing! posted by giraffe at 8:49 AM on December 4, 2010
I started with Mercedes Benz as instructed and was *very* meh for the first minute or so until she talked about how her husband could fuck off because she can't drive his Benz with her girlfriends. Stuck with it through the second linked vid and got to Give me the Food and in am now completely besotted. Now I'm spending Saturday working from home, watching the snow blanket the backyard and looping her albums on grooveshark. Whee! posted by hecho de la basura at 8:51 AM on December 4, 2010
The experience of hecho mirrors my experience. I am eternally grateful to be introduced to this woman and her music :) posted by drmanhattan at 9:18 AM on December 4, 2010

The only one I've heard is Russian Abstract/Alternative hip-hop group 2H Company. Here's the one track of theirs that I've had favorited on last fm (youtube link) Огурец мозга (which apparently, according to google, translates to "cucumber brain") posted by symbioid at 11:54 AM on December 4, 2010

Here is the original Kate Bush and video
I really had no idea how much Tori Amos lifted from her before watching that. posted by empath at 12:34 PM on December 4, 2010
Derail: every karaoke I've ever been to has Kate Bush on the song list, and I have never seen anyone attempt it. I've never been drunk enough to think it's a good idea myself, and I have been pretty drunk at karaoke. /derail posted by JoanArkham at 2:19 PM on December 4, 2010
You all need to check out Kultur Shock, and Let 3 and Atomik Harmomik. Kultur Shock is bases in Seattle but Balkans to the backbone. Let 3 are ou of Croatia and wild. Atomk Harmonik are from Slovenia and on top of being good, are really cut. All these groups can be found on YouTube posted by Katjusa Roquette at 2:40 PM on December 4, 2010
her earliest and biggest hit, Give Me the Food.
What a fun video. There is a brass band in the hot tub! Someone was asking me yesterday what my favorite junk food was and I was thinking a top five contender were these little waffles that you used to be able to buy from windmill-shaped huts in the main downtown area of Bucharest. For like ten cents a woman in a windmill would pop some waffle dough in a waffle press and a minute later you'd have a sticky crunchy mini-waffle with burnt sugar baked right in that you could carry with you while you froze your ass off walking around downtown. Give me the food.

Symbioid: If you like Atomik Harmonik the you might just appreciate this mashup of Atomik Harmonik and Laibach:
The Youtube description is worth quoting in full: "Laibach, the Trans-Slovenian conquerors of agitpop, and Atomik Harmonik, the ÜberKrainer champions of turbo-folk, meet at last.
It sounds like a reconciliation. Under the Savica Waterfall - in the name of Vilko, Slavko and the Holy Accordion." posted by razorian at 5:46 PM on December 4, 2010 [1 favorite]
