I came in here on the edge of my seat, hoping and wishing, that Paul Lynde made the cut, but no! Who would trust a website that ranks the New Kids' Christmas album as one of the worst ever, anyway?

No Harlan Ellison? (Rumor is that tape was destroyed.)
Even Ellison said that his segment was never broadcast. Of course, the site says that almost all the daytime show tapes were routinely destroyed, so we're lucky to get some of the earlier shows at all.
The son of friends of the family (who was involved with someone at the time)-- went on it and was picked by the woman (who was ALSO seeing someone else). Both of the SOs were pissed. posted by brujita at 12:54 AM on December 14, 2010
Arnold Schwarzenegger's accent hasn't changed since 1973? Perhaps when he speaks in German one would notice he has been living in the United States for 40 years, but his English in 1973 was no better than today. posted by three blind mice at 2:00 AM on December 14, 2010
I have a theory that your language skills will not improve after you reach a level where you are intelligible to the majority of people you interact with. Plus, if you look like Arnold people mostly stare at you in awe anway, so social feedback for improvement is probably not as effective. posted by Dr Dracator at 4:52 AM on December 14, 2010

Contestants were chosen for entertainment, not purely attractiveness, orange swan. Studies have shown beauty is not only fairly universal, but predisposed (babies look at beautiful faces longer than ugly ones).

three blind mice: That's because he learned the English phoneme set after age 8. Most people cannot add phonemes after that age, so accents don't improve for late-learned languages. I can think of Asians I've known with large English vocabularies, have lived in the US for decades, and are barely intelligible to many people unfamiliar with their accents. posted by IAmBroom at 9:15 AM on December 15, 2010
