MeFi post: "For the Chaotic Good"
I grew up on Stephenson and Gibson so there's a tiny part of me which believes /b/ will eventually save the world.

MetaTalk post: Recent screenshot thread?
Just chiming in another alternative, Aviary has a Firefox plug-in that does this as well, but also, if you add "aviary.com/" before any URL it'll do the full page screen capture as well open it into an image editor on their website.

Ask MeFi post: One Baby, Hold the Cadmium, Please
There's lots of camps like this as a parent. There are strict anti-gun toy camps, strict anti-gender stereotype camps, strict anti-television camps, strict anti-Elmo camps, strict anti-marketing to kids on food labels camps.

You can join any of them. They're always looking for new members.

For us, that shit's fucking exhausting. I think dogmatic feelings about parenting; when put up against a screaming baby, cleaning poo, or carrying a... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How do I become a considerate gift giver?
She is looking a gift horse in the mouth. Nay, staring it.

If one is given a gift, and one gets angry, one is simply very very likely to be wrong.

MetaTalk post: We don't care about the young folks?
Maybe they appropriated his fixed gear heritage, DU?

"Meh" to the hipsters. It's not about some collection of preferences being arbitrarily labeled as hip, at all. It's not being lacto-ovo-vegetarian, or messenger bags, or anything else. If there's one thing common to hipsters, it's that their involvement with things they enjoy comes in at a false, ironic level. Rather than true engagement, it's about an attitude that delivers a lot of... [more]

MetaTalk post: The kindness of strangers
So, tomorrow if anyone at work asks me what I did last night, I'll say: "I didn't do a thing, but a website where I regularly post links about comic books and toy soldiers saved a couple women from being victims of an international sex trafficking ring."

I'm not sure how I'm going to explain that.

MeFi post: How to Pay the Writer
flapjax FTW.

The median age for first selling a novel is around 35 -- meaning the majority of working novelists are somewhere north of 50. It takes time to learn enough about human beings to have something interesting to say about them. It's also a profession that lends itself to introverts.

Some of us can perform on stage -- but most of us can't. To make matters worse, storytelling doesn't lend itself... [more]

I'm pretty sure that methocarbamol is prescription only down there. If you've got a bad back/muscle aches it's pretty awesome. Look for Robax Platinum, or generics at drug stores.

Ask MeFi post: Who doesn't own their .com?
Oh, Morrison & Foerster, a large law firm (> 1,000 attorneys), uses mofo.com instead of morrisonfoerster.com. Oddly enough, they own morrisonfoerster.com but it doesn't redirect to mofo.com, instead it shows a generic placeholder page.

Ask MeFi post: Aren't we and space and ideas always changing?
The only useful axiom I know, was given by Schopenhauer, in Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung. Zweiter Band, Erstes Buch, Kapitel 17, stating that nobody should even try metaphysics, without knowing what physics had already made clear.

It's not an axiom many philosophers go by.

And this is why I am a science historian, not a science philosopher, though there are no strict boundaries between the two.

MeFi post: bookless library
I don't understand why this article is so focused on the costs of things like coffee machines and televisions. It detracts from the actual take-away, which is that there's a school experimenting with replacing library stacks with digital readers. Which is good --- we need early adopters to try new things so we can learn from their failures. And this will fail. They don't have enough digital readers: Every student needs one. And I suspect the digital readers' libraries are woefully... [more]

God botherers have a problem with Dawkins? What's that got to do with Dawkins involvement with this petition? Cause they'd totally approve, except, darn, it's DAWKINS!!!!!!!ONE!!UNO!!!

Dawkins position is not just all about "gay" - it's about hated minorities. Why Dawkins? Because he has a special angle - in his view, it hurts science. And as such his involvement is totally not arbitrary. He opposes the religious world view, because - among... [more]

MeFi post: The Horrific End of Banner Ads
They don't understand the medium. If they did, they'd leave a gore-spattered mess after the victim was dispatched or dragged off scene, and let the reader click the banner to see what the hell that was. By tossing up the logo, there's no incentive for click-through.

You can either advertise for saturation - show the product (character, in this case) and logo everywhere you can - or you can advertise for viral - get people engaged and interested, and lead them to a site... [more]

MeFi post: You know who else had "death panels"?
Having watched a few of these town hall videos, I keep seeing this same pattern come up with the questioners. Their questions usually go:

"Hello. Here is a relatively salient point about the health care proposals. My question to you, elected official, is OBAMAHITLER SOCIALISM DEATH PANELS KENYAN?"

I mean, go back to the NECN video with the full 15 minutes of Frank vs. his constituents. The woman starts off with a good point -- most... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Does everyone have terrible secrets? Or am I paranoid?
Everyone does coke on the weekends.

In the words of Aurthur Miller:
"Look, we're all the same; a man is a fourteen-room house --in the bedroom he's asleep with his intelligent wife, in the living-room he's rolling around with some bareass girl, in the library he's paying his taxes, in the yard he's raising tomatoes, and in the cellar he's making a bomb to blow it all up."

Ask MeFi post: Good music for Daddy & toddler?
My son's two and has never listened to anything but our own music collection. What's interesting is that recently, he heard a "kid's song" from a Sesame Street album and after one listening had it totally memorized, but when given the opportunity to listen to the album again, chose a Tom Waits song instead. I don't know what this means, but it was interesting. My dude loves:

...Borges was appointed Director of the National Library, the job of his dreams. By this time Borges was going completely blind; interestingly two of the previous directors of the National Library had also been

Expensive.

I'm staying at the Hilton London Kensington, which appears to be reasonably close to at least a couple of tube stops.

Snark aside, in the area of transit advice, that hotel is deceptively not-so-close to a tube stop. At least, not a useful one. The closest tube stop to you is ostensibly Olympia (called Kensington... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Learning tech skills for librarianship
The main way to learn this stuff if there aren't classes in it is to design a project yourself -- something that will motivate you to mess around with it -- and learn the ins and outs of it. I don't know you, but I do know a lot of librarians and I've found that sheer force of will and a general good attitude will go much MUCH farther than "tech skills" in terms of what you'd need to know to be good at a library job. One of the things about tech generally is that it changes, so while... [more]

It is an old maxim and a very sound one, that he that dances should always pay the fiddler. Now, sir, in the present case, if any gentlemen, whose money is a burden to them, choose to lead off a dance, I am decidedly opposed to the people’s money being used to pay the fiddler…all this to settle a question in which the people have no interest, and about which they care nothing. These capitalists generally act harmoniously, and in concert, to fleece the people, and now, that they have got into a... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Colonics - positive feedback?
Well, I do not think doctors carry all wisdom - there are lots of alternative ways out there that are effective yet not "approved" by conventional medicine.

Conventional medicine, subject to the scientific method, is not a conspiracy to exclude anything vaguely alternative-sounding. You can either demand that the health care you receive and self-administer is rigorously scrutinized and scientifically valid or you can join the... [more]

MeFi post: Who's going to break the news to Cory Doctorow?
The feeling steam punk arises in me is not one of revulsion or annoyance. It's a very distinct feeling that the English language does not have a good expression for. In Dutch it's called plaatsvervangende schaamte which literally means "place exchanging shame". Shame felt on behalf of someone else, shame you feel someone else should feel. I'm embarrassed for them.

Ask MeFi post: I wonder if the George Foremans have this problem.
This isn't only a billing problem, but it's also a medical one. At that hospital, your husband and his brother almost certainly have 1 medical file. Information such as allergies, medical history, etc are now all in error. This could compromise your husband's care if he should need it.

Approach the hospital with two problems. First, they incorrectly released his brother's medical information to your husband. This violates the brother's privacy rights. Second, there... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Copyright notice hung in library?
No, I don't think you need to do this. I think it's nannying and weird. Libraries post the copyright notice you refer to on their photocopy machines because they are nervous rule-following types. There are no copyright issues with internet content that are the library's business or responsibility.

Your boss is wrong and putting notices on computers about what to do with content is not the library's job and leads to a slippery slope where the whole monitor is covered by... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Dry Ice in car in place of a/c. A bad idea?
First of all, you can replace older style R12 refrigerant with new, ozone friendly R134a refrigerant, although you may need to find and fix the source of any leaks for systems which have already lost their refrigerant, to have a repair that lasts. This isn't as big a problem on some systems, as it is on others.

If you have a 16 year old Taurus, your A/C was designed and originally delivered with R12 Freon refrigerant. Ford used R12 refrigerant... [more]

Ask MeFi post: How do pilots time a flyover?
Stadium events, both for television and in general for sports, are extensively scripted before the event begins. I work for Texas A&M University in the Athletics department, and every one of our games features a flyover by an air wing with at least one former-Aggie member. My job role doesn't directly deal with the video department, but my office is next door.

The answer: Everything that happens except the game itself is scripted.

Ask MeFi post: If you killed somebody, how would you dispose of the body without getting caught?
First, be smart from the very beginning. Pulverize all teeth, burn off fingerprints, and disfigure the face. Forcing a DNA test to establish identity (if it ever comes to that) might introduce the legal/forensic hurdle that saves your ass down the line. An unidentifiable body can, in a pinch, be dressed in thrift store clothes and dropped in a bad part of town where the police are less likely to question it. I don't reommend that disposal method, I'm just saying an easily identifiable body is an... [more]
