MetaTalk post: Is "please no name calling" a big ask?
Can I ask just a clarifying thing? Is this MeTa really about "Drumpf" or is it about name calling more generally? I read the MeTa as name-calling overall but it seems like we're talking mostly about using sardonic nicknames that are not people's preferred names, rather than name calling overall.

I ask in part because there's an underlying set of discourse principles related to the "Drumpf" thing here, not quite consensus principles, but still, the... [more]

I'll be honest, as a Jewish person it unpleasantly reminds me of all the times people reference a Jewish entertainer's original name, like when I've seen people write "Jon Stewart (aka Jon Leibowitz)", and a trans user it reminds me of deadnaming.

I don't think that's what people are using it for though, I don't think those things being evoked are intended. I think it's an allistic signal of shared social identity, a littl signpost that says "I hate this... [more]

How far away from Vermont are you?

We might be able to broker something. I could certainly hold on to an eleventh edition EB for a while if you wanted to come fetch it at some point JanetLand. Mine is maybe a bit lonely.

That's seriously kind of you, but I honestly have so many books backed up waiting to be read, and now all of Pepys too, I think all that Britannica would overwhelm me.

well my dad died peacefully in the night. I'm very thankful for the peacefully part. he was 80 and had been very ill for a while. now on to the chaos of booking flights etc.,

and my mom just told me, told me, not asked me, that I am the speaker at the memorial service. a unanimous decision by my family members. I don't mind, I'm sort of the obvious choice and after my sister's wedding last year, also the only ordained minister. (it was also their idea... [more]

Oh, and follow-up to this comment from two weeks ago, my mother's doing better. The surgery went OK, though she has a gnarly series of stitches across the top of her head like a headband. She's in acute care now getting occupational and physical therapy to make sure she still has balance and isn't troubled by stairs.

MeFi post: Free tax filing, now and forever. (Actual taxes still not free)
I would imagine that, as the IRS realises how powerful free filing is for administering a tax system, there'll be efforts to move as many processes as possible into the free system. Tax code changes? Update the free system, automatic compliance. Auditing becomes a lot easier because the system can alert on good-faith mistakes. It's a lot easier to build automatic calculators into the software for obscure exceptions, and implementing these rules does sometimes uncover bugs in the tax code (I have... [more]

In this case, it gets even better. He absolutely, positively filed an expense report for that weed, and the SF Chronicle absolutely paid for it.

I took it as really just a wink/lampshade to the audience about the show otherwise treating "all the teachers" to mean just the ones with regular speaking roles (so Mr Morton included).

Great episode. My biggest takeaway from it was that Ayo would be an excellent SNL cast member, though I’d selfishly rather she keep doing what she’s doing rather than join SNL. Like, I didn’t love the Mr. Fantasmic sketch, but I absolutely loved Ayo in it.

Sarah Sherman as CJ was my high point also—especially the range of faces she made as “Cat’s in the Cradle” played.

MetaTalk post: MeFi Nonprofit Update, April 30, 2024
In my view a small group of formal interim board members is not necessarily bad (and smaller groups can be helpful sometimes),

Endorsing this point. A full board and committees are not necessary right now. You need a minimum of three people to stand up the nonprofit, no more. I’d focus on that and leave board recruitment and committtess and ED hire to a later stage. Trying to reach for more thinking at this stage may ve slowing stuff down.

For some background, much of this precipitated after recent unusual raids targeting gay bars in Seattle, WA.

Jockstraps and exposed nipples were given as pretexts, even though police in this city have become renowned for not doing much to stem serious violence and nuisance crimes despite pulling record-high salaries, so it looked like another sideways attempt to target the city's LGBTQ communities.

MeFi post: How often should we clean?
Something that I realized recently was that a lot of people I know hire housecleaners and then never mention it. I assume that their houses are so clean because they're much more organized and competent and non-ADHD than me, and I'm sure they are, but it's partly that there's stigma on paying for housecleaning services, so people don't mention that they do it.

I've already died four times due to dirty water bottles. Don't be like me!

Seriously, this is just dumb. Yes, wash it once in a while. I only use water and ice in mine, and I wash it when it looks a little funky. You have an immune system, and tap water is chlorinated. My father in-law was just warning me about this (he watches an absurd amount of daytime Tv and local news, but at least he's not a right-winger). This story must be making the rounds.

Thank you for this awesome post, PearlRose! You covered many important angles.
