MeFi post: "A blessing offers people a means to increase their trust in God."
What does this actually mean? It seems like a nice gesture...

Well, it's pushback against things like the announcement in my parish bulletin a couple of year ago that said, inside a heavy black border, that divorced people can't take communion and really shouldn't expect sacraments.

Francis is trying to carve out a more humane approach to regular people than that held by a lot of the hardline guys. I know... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Hacks on drinking less during the drinkiest time of year
Not intending to backseat-drive the thread, but I sense this is taking a turn away from answering the asker's question about moderation, which is pretty clearly stated, and into challenging the premise and kinda implicitly scolding the asker along the way.

With the understanding that alcohol can be a fraught topic for many of us for many reasons, and that all answers here are well-intentioned, I think it'd be most constructive for the thread to redirect back to the... [more]

MetaTalk post: Updating crisis resource links, aka help for "There Is Help"
I used ThereIsHelp twice recently to find resources for two friends in different countries. While it's a great resource, my experience was that there were many broken links so thanks for raising this, Tangerine.

I've run the page through an automated link checker and pasted the result into a Grist online spreadsheet. For anyone who doesn't want to create an account on the Wiki or isn't confident editing wikitext, this is a simple place anyone can enter a replacement for... [more]

MeFi post: We're Listening
OK, I checked that actual website. I note it is very careful to just talk about devices listening. It does not use the word record, or microphone, or give any clues at all how it really works.

I am prepared to bet that they are actually selling targeting based on analytics and browsing behaviour and being very cute about what it means for a device to "listen" to you. In other words, this is Sea Monkeys for ad people.... [more]

Murderbot is affirmatively genderless, as in has no gender and doesn't want one, and is written in a way that some readers have a more feminine mental picture of Murderbot and others more masculine. (EDIT: like that, see?!) So there was no casting that would have ever satisfied everyone. Me, I think at least Skarsgård is pretty good at the "being wearily put upon yet again" part of Murderbot.

I'm also cautiously hopeful about it, but the novella/novel series... [more]

MeFi post: Jigsaw Puzzler
I know I'm supposed to engage with the math problem at hand, but I feel compelled to point out that some of those surface protection mats for the floor can also be very useful for jigsaw-sizing a table surface too small for the task. (Maybe don't let it project over the table surface on the side where you plan to lean on it)

MetaTalk post: Updating crisis resource links, aka help for "There Is Help"
About updating the page, what comes to mind:
* I can enable the visual editor. the software is due an update anyway.
* we could use the Talk/Discussion page to help coordinate and track progress - like, "I cleaned up *this section*" perhaps
* using other tools, I could add a note for every link, like "2023-12-12 - let's re-verify this", possibly as a comment, invisible to most viewers. I'm far than enthused about this, though; it feels... [more]

I got to see metafilter user Cold Chef yesterday when he eulogized his best friend, my nephew. Can you imagine giving the eulogy for your best friend? (Perhaps you have done that.) Cold Chef told me before the service that he had talked to Jessamyn who had told him "You've been training for this your whole life". He spoke for about 30 minutes; he was funny and warm and gave a marvelous tribute to the deceased with many stories that I hadn't known.

I've always wanted to create an Ask MetaFilter area of the site but was weighed down in issues of how to manage it, if I should charge some nominal fee to ask a question (to keep the number of questions down), etc.

Been arguing relentlessly about business plans for years now and this monetization was just sitting there in 2003.

Shout out to AskMe and its 20 years of help and lessons. I don't use it much anymore, but part of that is because I write a question and ponder what AskMe would say and that answers the query. That's pretty great, the site managed to get me to grow and learn and now sort of lives in my head.

Pretty use of $5 US, which can rarely even buy a good cheeseburger these days.

MetaTalk post: I swear, I saw it with my own two eyes.....
Twenty-plus years ago I was on my break from lifeguarding and decided to use my time to paddle way out past the breakers and just bliss out for a bit. The water was exceptionally clear that day and when I got to my spot, in maybe 12 feet of water, I thought I could see something shiny down in the sand below me, so I put on the goggles that I always kept around my neck (I wore contacts at the time) and dove down to take a look. When I got to the bottom I discovered it was just a piece of abalone... [more]

MeFi post: Mastodon is Easy and Fun Except when it isn't
The reality is that a social media platform that isn't growing is one that's dying. Now, there's a lot to be said about managing growth in a healthy manner, but at the end of the day, growth is necessary as a healthy community is one that has influx.

this sounds oddly like a resolutely capitalist POV (growth-growth-growth-must-always-be-growing), which I'm pretty sure is far from the intention. More to the point, I think it misses the value of... [more]

There can be a fair number of cranky gatekeepers scolding you because you aren't Mastodoning the "right" way.

Block them and move on.

Time on Twitter taught me that, generally, you don't owe anyone anything on social media other than to be (mostly) civil. You certainly don't owe anyone your time and attention. You don't need to put up with the self-righteous hall monitors. Don't be a jerk and you'll be fine.... [more]

MetaTalk post: MeFi Nonprofit -- Volunteers, Purpose, Name
A mission is a very high level document. It answers the question why do we exist? It should be the least limiting and most purpose-focused expression of intent. A mission does not need to include a laundry list of everything an organization does, what it believes and how they believe it should be done. That's why it's usually also part of an infrastructure of several core documents that also includes a vision, a values statement, and often a shortlist... [more]
