MeFi post: You think I own Ikea?
You mean I’m not being witty when I say something must be free when it doesn’t scan?

My dad always said this ... And now I always say this.

The trick is to say it ironically, so that both you and the cashier are in on it together and can chuckle good-naturedly at the cruel "joke" that is life itself.

...I may have said too much.

My son asked if "the MeFites" would appreciate the little code project he spun up, a countdown clock, which we can see as either a timer for the end of a miserable four years, or for the start of four hopeful years.

Just 7,500 seconds to go as I post this...

MeFi post: Parler Games
The sequential numbers trick is how I looked up more adult content twenty years ago. Good times.

The sequential numbers trick is how I created this account while signups were closed.

> One day's archive of Parler will easily exceed two decades of Metafilter's.

2001:
Metafilter: "We have cameras."

Two decades later:
Parler: "We really shouldn't have used all those cameras when we attacked the Capitol Building and murdered that cop with a fire extinguisher."

MetaTalk post: MetaFilter Gift Swap 2020 THANK YOU!
Hello, everyone!

The 2020 gift swap is wrapping up — we've got a few gifts still in transit, and we have a few folks in need of second chancing but I’ve got the volunteers for that and will be filling those requests this weekend.

We had 255 participants this year, mostly split between International and the US. We also introduced the new International Spirit category, and I want to thank the folks that signed up for that and tried it out this... [more]

I had to drop my car off for some routine maintenance this morning, and decided to walk around while waiting. The news broke and the neighborhood I was walking through busted out the pots, pans, cheering, and general good vibes. That never really feels like a Portland thing, and it felt great, this sense of community I haven't had in awhile.

I've exhaled so deeply and for so long today that my lungs have crossed into a threshold of... [more]

Projects post: linocut print: A Powerful Culture
I know this is pretty old, but I read some parts of the report last night, and had a bunch of thoughts about it, so I decided to write them up here.

I'd seen the quote in your print before as sort of a meme, but I hadn't read the actual document it was from — thank you for spurring me to do that!

Ask MeFi post: Help with Chord Progressions for Lucky Sue
OK, I finally had some time this weekend to check out this song. It has lots of chords, and tasty ones at that! Now that I've puzzled over it for a few hours I intend to listen to the rest of their stuff.

However, though I am loathe to contradict our illustrious leader, my own analysis (as a keyboard slightly-more-than-beginner but dyed-in-the-wool jazzhead) including the bass lines suggests to me a different key and progression than what he commented above. Here's my... [more]

I mean, going by your illustration, if $700 is just shaved, then $600-$650 seems like the funniest haircut and the most bang for the buck. Kind of an extreme Moe Howard thing.

Ask MeFi post: What is this weird little card?
Correct, it's a tray label. The ones in trip and a half's link are way old; they no longer use the zebra code at all, and instead of the ten digit barcode in the examples it's now the 24-digit code you see on yours (some labels may still have the transition label, which included both the old 10 digit code and the new 24 digit). Current info is here (scroll down to 4.3, the Intelligent Mail section) They're used for routing mail through the system. It was most likely printed off a Microcom 426 or... [more]

MeFi post: room for [...] mistakes.
The context is a key detail that makes the Harpers letter terrible because the letter is so vague otherwise. But it's not the only thing that makes this a bad letter. There are a number of issues with the arguments themselves, such as they are, regardless of the context of the signatories.

For starters, it blames some things on "the mob" for which blame or responsibility lies elsewhere; specifically:

1. Lack of labor... [more]

cortex, I hope you appreciate that I am sitting here with a perfect crystalline tear on my cheek. MeFi post: "so, i just want to emphasize that what i'm doing here is BAD"
My Dad was a man like this. Similar build, and he also had a big grey beard. He was a sculptor. He built a working bronze foundry next to our house in rural Texas when I was a kid. He always had multiple projects going at any one time. Like the guy in the video, he was very often working with some jury-rigged setup that was a little dangerous but worked. He also would very often make the tools that he didn't have. Again like the guy in the video, he had an intuitive confidence for the way that... [more]
