MetaTalk post: Two new mods: welcome to travelingthyme and loup!
Hooray! Welcome and the very best of luck. This is a great place to work - often intense and demanding, always rewarding. I hope it suits you and you find that you suit it.

MetaTalk post: Another COVID communication post
Because this crisis is so enormous and universal, and because we all have our own personal experience with it, there's maybe more than usual risk of falling into the trap of thinking that everyone is in more or less the same boat, and thus should rationally be making more or less the same choices we are - and that if they're not, they're either acting in error or in some way casting aspersions on our own choices.

As others have pointed out, though, there's a huge variety... [more]

Ask MeFi post: Word game involving linking similar-sounding words by definitions?
I heard this AskMe discussed on the podcast. I dug into basically this question for this Metafilter thread. There's a bunch of examples in the Chain Of Corrections TVTropes article, including a Mad Magazine example from 1955, and it was apparently a staple of Fibber McGee and Molly, a 1930s radio show.

MetaTalk post: March open thread: Disability/ableism
Hey danabanana and anyone else with visual impairments, I run that program! It's for anyone with print disabilities (including things like dyslexia and cognitive processing issues, tho be sure to specify). You can avoid the wait lists for library titles, get access to a larger set of titles generally, and request EPUBs or PDFs without DRM if you need them. Happy to answer questions, feel free to MeMail or email.

This is a really sucky time to be 35 weeks pregnant.

We finished out baby classes this week and the instructor told us that with current guidelines if we have coronavirus when I give birth for safety reasons we won't be able to hold our baby. We can pump and let someone healthy bottle feed, but that's it. I've got weeks to go and am currently healthy but the idea that I or my partner might not be able to hold our daughter is bringing me near tears.

I mean honestly a lot of us are so far down the rabbit hole on metalayers of shitposting after all these years

There‘s an evo-devo theory that socialization was one of the primary evolutionary drivers of human intelligence. MetaTalk post: Disability/ableism thread: access intimacy, taking care of each other
But fuck it's spotty going, and as much as part of what I'm trying to work on is not catastrophizing about letting little things slip that it's okay to let slip a bit, the anxiety about something really slipping that I can't afford to let slip just loops it all back on itself.

Sup. Things coming to a head is a thing. One can be a high-functioning neuroatypical person with mental illness and not realize it for many years. You'd think one or one's friends and family might take a look at the bad job one stayed in for years and consider the discrepancy between that and one's youthful academic achievements and determine that there's maybe something wrong, but you'd be incorrect.

That's pretty incoherent, but that's all I got. Sorry if I yelled at... [more]

20 years ago I worked at one of the country's biggest "name" architectural firms. Just a note on why I posted this: I had a conversation with a MeFite in which he was shocked that Metafilter was looking for alternative revenue sources. "They made money off advertising ten years ago. What are they doing with the money that they can't make it work now?" Hey! OP here. Just pointing out to people annoyed at the title that, as a lesbian myself, I don't really see being a lesbian as something salacious? I specifically pointed it out because I was glad the first crime in space was done by a lesbian. It feels right.

If y'all still want the title changed, I'm fine with that, but I do wonder why folks consider the word "lesbian" to be something pornographic by default. Like, the vast majority of... [more]

MetaTalk post: Decommissioning the US politics megathreads
This is a big problem for me, but probably not for the reason you're thinking. I haven't read a megathread in over a year. Keeping up was a sisyphean task and I would never catch up with reality. But now the task of catching up isn't sisyphean, it's daunting but finite. Suddenly I'm compelled to pick up the rock again.

So if I lose more years of my life to reading the megathreads, then I'm going to blame some of the people in this thread; and then I do not forgive.
