Barney is a 6 year old boy whose dad bought the .co.uk domain of his name so he can use it when he's older. Barney is a 60 million year old malevolent purple dinosaur and wants "his" domain name back. Hilarity, thinly vieled contempt and common-sense ensues .. (via NTK)

Unfortunately the Expert cannot fully decipher the Complainant's submission here. The Complainant states that it did not have a department specialising in domain registrations when the registration took place and consequently that unfair advantage was taken by the registration. This is quite simply a non-sequitur.
You can almost hear the judge muttering "...you fucking idiots" under his breath as you read this.
Happy ending. It's nice to know that the powers that be are not on the side of the big companies. At least, not this particular power that be (is?).

I think that Barney's father should put up a new picture on the site :
Barney, dressed in a shockingly purple, oversize snow suit.
As young Barney grows up, he may come to inhabit the inheritance of his father's foresight and - when he comes to legal age - take pictures of himself wearing purple suits that make him look strangely like a dinosaur!......
And giving the finger .

The Complainant provides copy Registration and Renewal Certificates for trade mark numbers 1512789 and 1512790 which indicate that these are for the word/device 'BABY BOP'. It is not clear why these marks are listed as they bear no relation to the name BARNEY or to the Complainant's general submission.

I for one am immensely pleased by this news. Tom beat me to the website by a few months - I first enquired about it in June 1998 - and I've been cursing my own tardiness ever since. If anything I was suprised it had taken so long for a challenge to arise - especially after they put paid to the sorely missed Punch Barney page on Urban75.
And I'd also congratulate Tom on his supreme good taste when naming his son. There's not many of us Barneys left in the world. As a name it was more popular at the start of the 20th century, being 269th of the top 1000 male names (admittedly in the US rather than the UK) in the first decade, settling down to a position in the 400's throughout the 1920's-50's, before dropping out completely in the 1970's. It's more commonly used as a nickname (e.g. Barney Sumner of New Order or Raymond van Barneveld, as pointed out by mr.marx.)
I am not aware of any other famous people actually called Barney, though the classic Boo Radleys album included the track 'Barney and Me', which got to number 48 in the UK Singles chart in February 1994.

Without wanting to be a pedant I should point out that this is happening outside of the English legal system. Nominet has no statutory basis upon which to found its authority to adjudicate in domain name disputes. This is a case of self-regulation which actually works; of course Nomi have every incentive to make it work as the Government could easily bring internet domain name registration with OFCOM’s remit thus stealing all of Nomi’s cheese. (Not that it’s profit making anyway.) Much like the old City Panel on Takeovers and Mergers Nominet appears to legally ‘hang in the air.’
