There's a new version of line rider, a game where a little guy on a sled rides down lines. This new version features a 'flag' button that lets you save the speed and position and edit from there, allowing you to create great epic paths incrementally through trial and error.

Other cool features include 'accelerating paths', the ability to save your paths and come back to them, and a straight line tool and eraser. (and stay away from this lame-ass spam site)

Talk about kludgy

kludge or kluge
n. Slang
1. A system, especially a computer system, that is constituted of poorly matched elements or of elements originally intended for other applications.
2. A clumsy or inelegant solution to a problem.
Actually from ironic use of earlier kluge, smart, clever, from spelling pronunciation of German kluge, from Middle High German kluc, from Middle Low German klk.

Nice, I had fun with the original, of course, but it seemed so ridiculous that there was no eraser or straight line that I stopped.
Now I can be like that guy, and set my little sleigh epic to a Luke Vibert remix of the Cowboy Bebop theme...

That Jagged Peak Adventure video was pretty amazing. Here's the sequel.

Not to be a contrarian, but I found that a lot off the charm of the first Line Rider was the constraints. I've played around with the new version a bit and it hasn't quite ignited my imagination in the same way as the original.

Why does the rider occasionally go straight through (more or less vertical, when I'm trying to catch the guy after a jump) lines?

I lost several hours this weekend to the new version.

Why does the rider occasionally go straight through (more or less vertical, when I'm trying to catch the guy after a jump) lines?

It's a function of the orientation of the line. Takes a while to figure out but draw left to right or right to left has an impact on whether the line is a floor or a ceiling. Holding the shift key while drawing a line will also reverse floor/ceiling.

The sequel to Jagged Peak Rider has one of my favourite tunes too.

Sheesh, people, come on!!!! This is the most vapid, senseless, and mind-numbing waste of time imaginable. Best of the web? HA! WTF!? For crying out loud, try harder. This is just so stupid.

So how come I can't stop watching it?

I'm wondering about the appeal of these line-drawing type games. Is it some sort of unconscious yearning for a simpler life amidst all the random clutter?

I think we're drawn that way.

Wow. Some people are phenomenally good at drawing curved lines with a mouse. Mine come out much more blocky. :)
