My Name Is Red is superb, I can't recommend it enough, and I enjoyed Snow (though i've heard the translation is compleletly uninspired, and it shows). I've ended up stalling a little on his other books though - I've got one half read on a shelf I'll probably never quite get round to going back to.

Give Snow a chance. It's a looooong, haaard read, but completely worthwhile in the end. If anything, it gives you an insight into the political Islamist state of mind.

Thanks for this post semmi and delicious Orhan Pamuk writing. mmm. I loved his My Father's Suitcase, a charming and tender speech. The Pamuk Apartments is a wonderful child's eye view of the mysterious world, especially interesting because it's about the transition between the tail end of the Ottoman Empire and present day Istanbul. It has a sensual, slow pace, dreamy. Very nice.

That was precise and right (in my dark bedroom). Thank you.
