Last night, the reunited Smashing Pumpkins (sans James and D'arcy) completed the fourth of a nine-show residency at The Orange Peel in Asheville, NC. This event started with some ticket problems, a bit of controversy by bumping local acts (check out the comment thread) and even more controversy from the locals who didn't get tickets. After all, the locals are the ones who support the local artists and venues, including The Orange Peel, that make Asheville's music scene unique and intimate -- enough for Billy to book the city (and San Francisco, only). But all that aside, the new Smashing Pumpkins sounded great.

(Oh, and appealing to a higher power can work for you!)

This post was deleted for the following reason: We probably don't need two Corgan posts in ten days; maybe stick your show wrap-up in the open thread, or on your blog. -- cortex

I went to a gig last night too.

Stay tuned for my post tomorrow on Rickie Lee Jones and what happened at her show tonight.

[BTW, previous recent Pumpkins discussion here.]

Whether you like the Smashing Pumpkins or not, what this 9 show run has done for Asheville is really cool. Since so much of the music press is in the area, the city has spat out a festival's worth of shows. There are a ton of concerts every day, and it seems like a great time for local bands to get some attention from prominent critics who ordinarily wouldn't be exposed to their music.

So, half the original band members aren't there, but it's still "the reunited Smashing Pumpkins"?

From everything I read back in the day, James and D'Arcy were pretty much stage and magazine cover props anyway. Corgan was notorious for recording over their studio tracks himself.

So basically, Billy Corgan realized he could make more money by using the Smashing Pumpkins name than he could solo.

Corgan was notorious for recording over their studio tracks himself.
That's because he's a fucking egomaniac.
