Judith Griggs, of Cooks Source magazine, recently brought down the "nerd rage" of the internet on herself, her magazine, and her advertisers by stealing an article from Monica a.k.a. "Illadore" (previously). Today, Griggs announced that her magazine is ending, and blamed Monica for her troubles. Probably not the best way to avoid Round Two from the blogosphere... (Ironically, Judith's farewell post is filled with typographical errors, something one would expect a professional editor to catch.)

Of course she doesn't get it. Read the piece: she's still the victim, working the long hours, and some few troublemakers just don't understand. Ever and always.
But isn't this conclusion pretty damning of however many hundreds of internet hours have been wasted on this? Griggs will shut down this tiny rag that no one had ever heard of a month ago, and the world will continue to be pretty much the same as it ever was. The phrase "pick your battles" usually means going after something you can win - but this was always going to be winnable. The world's full of small-minded people with an inflated sense of entitlement. Why not go after a battle that will mean something?

How so? As I see it, Griggs made the decision to passive-aggressively blame others. This isn't the fault of Gaudio, and it's certainly not the fault of the Big, Bad, Mean, Bullying Internets. Griggs had an easy way out. Hell, Gaudio gave her a very, very easy way out, given that she could have beaten Griggs senseless with lawyers. But Griggs chose not to take it, instead essentially blaming everyone but herself for her own mistakes.
Maybe there was a lot of smoke for a little fire, but do not sit there and give us some "this is why we can't have nice things" speech. This is what copyright is there for -- to protect creators from being profited on by others without compensation. This wasn't some local official shutting down a kid's bake sale. This was a magazine, albeit a free publication, making money off someone else's work without permission.
So don't go yelling at bloggers in pajamas for what happened. Griggs dug her own hole and refused numerous attempts to be helped out.

I read one advertiser complain that they wanted to pull their ads but could not because they had prepaid months in advance.
Let me guess how this is going to work out: he magazine folds and keeps the advance money for the ads. They get paid for doing nothing. This is the best thing to ever happen to Griggs, she thinks she has an excuse to take the money and run.

Instead of picking up one of the multitude of books sent to me and typing it, I got lazy and went to the www and "found" something. Bleary-eyed I didnt notice it was copy written and reordered some of it.
Somehow I doubt she'll ever understand copyright.
