Yippie. Denmark beats US in world cup hockey. We have not participated in the world cup since a 0-47 loss to Canada in 1949.

We? As in Metafilter? I didn't know we had a team.

sorry, "we" as in Denmark. Got a little too patriotic there, I guess

Congratulations! And "we" do the "we" thing all the time - nice to see a reminder that the "we" of MeFi does not equal U.S.

The US team lost again. This time 1-0 to Switzerland. If they (the US team) is defeated by Russia in their last match of the preliminary round, they face the risk of being degraded to the B-group.

Congratulations, Denmark!

I really don't follow hockey closely, but they have World Cup matches during the NHL playoffs? I'm guessing a lot of good U.S. players are not on their national team.

Go Mighty Ducks!

Go Mighty Ducks!

**grumble grumble**

And 0-47? Fucking A, man.

Congrats to the Denmark team!

Unfortunately the timing does have most of the top US players still playing for their respective NHL teams; but the same can be said for all the Hockey Nations (Canada, Sweden, Finland, Russia,etc..).

And the absence of Modano, Hatcher, etc shouldn't diminish the magnitude of the Danish accomplishment.

Though, i have to admit i am a little disappointed. My favourite finals are those which pit the Canadian team against the US team.

Cheers, and GO CANUCKS!

Go Canucks Go!

I think that not having the NHL players in there is better for the IIHF. I think once you go pro that's it. I always used to enjoy watching Olympic hockey because without the NHL style of hockey (ie, fights) you saw a more skill based style.

And I love the comments on the power rankings page.

(Not that my feelings on having NHL players on a team has stopped Team Canada from loading up with a bunch of them. Ah well.)

"They [Denmark] played great and deserved to win.

I love how Americans always set the moral tone for any circumstance. They deserved to win. Thanks, America!

It's a pretty common thing for a losing team to say Jesse. But don't let that stop you.

If the US are relegated to the B group, does that have implications for their Olympic qualification?

Note that the football world cup clashes with the MLS regular season every four years. This year's rugby world cup will clash with the Northern Hemisphere regular season. In both cases, the international events have priority.

How do you even manage to get out of bed every day Jesse? You're so pathetic sometimes.

Denmark, good for you.

Good job and congratulations, but don't hope for the same results when you come up against the Edmonton Oilers Team Canada.

Well done Denmark! It should be noted that this is actually the World Championship, not the World Cup. The World Championship is a fairly big event over in Europe from what I understand, but less so on this side of the pond since it goes up against the NHL playoffs. The World Cup (formerly Canada Cup) is played every once in a while during the off-season. Frankly, I think they should just drop the World Cup and be happy with the Olympics. But the NHL likes the money it makes, so...

And 47-0? Holy crap. Did they even have someone in net?

Go Canada Go!

What a better way to answer for a 47-0 loss more than 50 years ago than to smack the USA 5-2, and tie the eventual gold medal team Canada 2-2?

I recieved permission to post a few photos of Denmark in the World Championships here, there are a few links to Danish hockey as well:

America won its last game which means it will not have to play in a tournament to qualify for next year. I believe next years tournament will determine who gets chosen for the Olympics.
