Buy your kid a new doll you cheap bastards! - Apparently barbie dolls and other plastic toys made in the 1950's have recently been found to secrete a sticky chemical film that could cause developmental problems in children.
Yet another reason to eliminate production of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC).
For basic health info on PVC, check out this Fact Sheet:
"PVC is the most environmentally damaging plastic. The PVC lifecycle -- its production, use, and disposal -- results in the release of toxic, chlorine-based chemicals. These toxins are building up in the water, air and food chain.
The result: severe health problems, including cancer, immune system damage, and hormone disruption. No one can escape contamination: Everyone, everywhere has measurable levels of chlorinated toxins in their bodies."
Including, of course, dioxin -- an important cause of cancer in humans.
Here is an in-depth report on the relationship between PVC production and dioxin:
"The purpose of this report is to show that the lifecycle of polyvinyl chloride plastic, also known as PVC or vinyl, is a major source of dioxin pollution. When PVC is manufactured, disposed of by incineration, burned accidentally, or when products containing PVC (usually as a coating or covering on a metal product) are recycled in combustion-based processes, large quantities of dioxin are formed. In fact, PVC is a major chlorine donor -- and thus a significant cause of dioxin generation -- in a large percentage of identified dioxin sources. These are strong grounds for holding PVC responsible for a substantial and growing proportion of global dioxin production and release. Fortunately, cleaner substitutes exist for almost all uses of PVC."

So, how long did Mattel know and cover this up? I'd love to see Mattel up to thier non-existent Barbie genitalia in hungry lawyers looking for something to do after the tobacco lawsuits...
