George, W. Bush, print model. I especially like the one of his fingers on the desk. Who's his image consultant, I wonder?

Touching photo essay, and I don't mean to be so cynical about the intent behind it. Or maybe I'm lying. So what do you suppose was the actual intent behind it?

The caption for the fourth picture should read:
"Cmon Dick, you know you can't order a cheesesteak. Is Condy going to have to call your cardiologist again?"

the intent: they're working to create the mythology of the moment, very important for making the country feel that they're in safe, capable hands and for defining an important moment in American history.

I'll refrain from being an insensitive jerk (or something) myself, but this one really is open for some great captions...

It's definite spin, but one of those ocassions that may call for it. Thousands of people were killed and its the role of the leadership to assure the citizenry that the people in charge know what the hell they're doing.

If that was Clinton's finger we'd be wondering where it'd been last.

number 12 seems really odd to me. everyone is solemn, but the Bushes are holding hands and smirking.

skallas: Nah, no kung-fu. The caption on that photo should be "...And it's THIS long!"
And I don't think he was referring to the fish he caught on his last fishing trip.
The whole set of pix shows how anybody can change how *you* view a photo by changing the caption on it. Look at them again without the captions. Very weird.

Number 12 wins the creepy award.

anyone else notice the photo with hillary clinton? everyone in that room is smiling, enchanted, happy to be there with the president... and she's definitely nonplussed... she looked the same way during the speech last night. considering all he's doing for the state she's decided is somehow her own, she should ease up on the guy.

What smirking? I think everyone interprets their facial expressions depending on their individual political bent.

Looks to me like George Sr. is clasping George Jr.'s hand in a gesture of solidarity and Barb is genuinely touched by it and smiling.

Why does everything about this man have to be unnecessarily criticized?

She's watching any legacy that her husband created vanish into thin air, that's why she looks this way. Anything Bill did for this country will quickly be forgotten in the history books and instead history will highlight what is happening now...and with Bush as president.

Oh yeah, plus she's a bitch...

Scrutiny is natural in such situations. I'd be worried if a president who has the country committed to a long war was not scrutinized.

It really hammers home how much time passed before he went to NY (photo 15 of 17), doesn't it?

If that was clinton it's not his finger we'd have to worry about.

In photo 13, it looks (to me, anyway) as though he is floating up and away, suddenly levitating over his desk. Or not. Maybe it's just me.

They have W's busy fingers (it's at least a two-finger job) on video.

I think everyone interprets their facial expressions depending on their individual political bent.

So your claim is that there is no such thing as an objective analysis of facial expressions? That none of us ever use non-verbal cues like smiles, frowns, body language to aid in our largely unconscious assessment of others' attempts at communication?

Or are you just cynically implying that while there ARE valid interpretations, only you can see them accurately and everyone else is wrong?

"Pepperoni and pineapple okay with everyone?"

"I'm a jet fighter! Eeeeeeeeeee-roooooooooo!"

"Your husband did WHAT? With WHO? In THIS office?"

Sorry if this is inappropriate. I do think they're pretty good pictures. I just tend to think like this. :)

Anyhoo -- I think if the whole photo essay weren't so smarmily slick (I've been party to print shoots myself, so trust me -- some of these were SO VERY set up, with lighting and filters), I wouldn't have been taken aback by them.

It's nice to see them doing something on whitehouse.gov. It's been a long time since I've seen any positive links to the WH site.

For the President & Vice-President, there are assigned photographers that constantly take pictures during all working hours for historical documenting. The photographers have top clearance and are always right there in the action.

So despite my feelings about Bush, these probably weren't set up.
