I really love it when people look back at moments like these and examine them from all sides, giving the humans involved the benefit of the doubt for, you know, actually being human. Great post!

I actually really liked She Was Nice to Mice. I had it on vinyl when I was little and used to listen to it all the time. As I recall, it was narrated by the young author.

The Awl has a knack for making me care about things I thought I didn't care about.

She was such a nice girl until she started hanging around with that no good computer hacker boy.

I like to pretend sometimes that the characters played by actors are the same people in different movies, and wonder if her character in War Games is the before or after of her character in Breakfast Club. ;)

I haven't read through all of it yet, but I found great pleasure in the line: I do, yes, I totally do think that's not very sympathetic.

I don't always agree with her opinions, but Maria Bustillos writes consistently fascinating articles.

"The book came out in 1991, the same year as Nevermind; millions would soon be in the thrall of the anarchic, indeed somewhat Occupy-like message of Kurt Cobain, the real poet of that era."

What a terrible terrible article on an interesting subject.

That somehow made me have more of a crush on Sheedy (who's only a year older than me) than I already did. Also, a former girlfriend mused, after I mentioned my crush on Sheedy, that all of her SOs weirdly have had crushes on Sheedy. Well, yeah. We're like, you know, normal people.

I really really don't understand this. Is The Awl a sub-Mcsweeney's comedy site? Is she writing in some kind of weird ironic character? How else to explain lines like

"In attempting to understand the idea of "stardom" and its place in our culture, I often return to Russell Brand..."

Makes sense to me.
