Death metal is so cheesy. I can't get my head around people taking it seriously, let alone feeling it's something like really dark.

That would happen here.

All I have to add of personal relevance to this topic is that one of the Cannibal Corpse guys is married to a friend's sister. They have a mule.

... yep. A mule. S'all I got.

You want cheesy? It's hard to top this. But yeah, the music we take seriously, the rest.....a thing can be ridiculous and awesome at the same time.

A fair effort, but I think it's possible.

I think it's safe to say that most metal can be divided neatly into two camps: the guys who know it's mostly B-movie horror camp, and those who take it seriously. I don't find the latter very frightening, personally - I mean they're metal fans; what's the worst they're going to do, burn a church? - but it does make me appreciate the former group a lot more. Cannibal Corpse are a good case in point; they don't take their schtick seriously, and anyone who does is probably a 12 year old who is annoyed with his parents.

Oh dear.

As a CC fan I have to say - yea that seems about right.

vanar sena's right, I think for a lot of people who listen to Death Metal the gore stuff isn't 'dark', it's tongue in cheek - or rather tongue through rotting cheek. Carcass' early song titles were hilarious.

Having said that (and at the risk of opening up a whole can of worms) I don't listen to Cannibal Corpse due to all the references to sexual violence.

I like Cannibal Corpse and they're a particularly fun live band. But I think the Chasers dealt with their lyrics on the appropriate level.

Whooooa, nice. That second clip made me think of this.

And spectrevsrector, I generally agree with you. I lean more towards the arty-farty inoffensive end of the underground, but occasionally I enjoy the shit out of groups like Cattle Decap.

Think that's bad, you ever heard Kanye West's "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy"?

Its not only _dark_, but beautiful *and* twisted.

(and much cheesier than anything ever called death metal)

People take that crap seriously, so seriously he'll never have to do a car commercial.

But it still sucks.

Just like your favorite band.
