FilePile

FilePile has redesigned. I think it's ugly as all getout, but the rating system is much more intuitive. What do y'all think?

I never really equated my enjoyment of FilePile with it's aesthetic. I like it... Efficient use of real estate on my dinky 800X600 iBook screen. The text section has wonderful possibilities.

did anyone notice that the complete text of kevin smith's movie, clerks, is in the text section? (clerks.txt)

Has Filepile gone to a strictly user system? I can't view anything. I never set up an account.

I like it. Looks like a Unix "ls" command.

The text pile rules. For the other piles, though, I very much miss the byte count. And I presume the archive pages will eventually have all the data (and links to threads) that the front page offers.

thirty-six dicks?!

I agree, the text pile is really really cool. He needs to bring back the top ten (or even better, top 100) pile.

Too much in too little of a place. I go crosseyed when I try to pick out something.

"that's like whoa."

not bad.. it'll take a little getting used to, but the idea of a textpile is pretty good. i am expecting lot of erotica (lotsofno) soon. but they really need to bring the top 10 back..

from reading the comments here, i was a little scared at first before i checked it out.. thank god it didn't end up looking like blogdex after the redesign. (no offense to cameron though.. the site is still great. it's just the new design is so....)

What jjg said on the byte count. The new ratings are great though.

I'd close up the spacing within the piles and put more between piles. There's just not enough visual hierarchy to the page. The little colored squares definitely don't provide it.

I miss the old logo too.

I'd bold-face the name of each pile. Hard to tell which is which.

Can we please have the old pile back? Pretty please?

not crazy about it, but frankly you don't go to filepile for the design - you go 'cuz the concept is so absolutely perfect.

It's like a public coffee table where people leave things for everyone else to look at. Some people leave CDs of classic songs and funny videos, and others leave copies of Playboy and silly jokes written down on post-its. It's all good, and people stop by the coffee table because of the classic songs AND the copies of Playboy.

One thing that always worries me is the day when the RIAA walks by the coffee table and glances down...

thirty-six dicks?!

Uhh, thirty-seven, including Dante.

No worries: we'll just leave dozens upon dozens of heart-meltingly cute kitties on the coffee table then. The RIAA will be powerless! The day will be saved!

at least its faster loading now. if not very convenient to scan quickly. that's my only peeve: there's so much in so little area that it's difficule to scan. especially for those of us who peruse while at work (sometimes).

Welcome To File Pile! This welcome message could be better.

heh.

Love the new styleeee, but why can't old files be archived? It may prevent some reposting.

isn't the second rule about filepile NOT to tell anyone about it?
posted by remlapm at 6:26 AM on October 19, 2001

Ooooh, it is ugly. Nevertheless, it (no verbe present) marvellous.
posted by mmarcos at 6:39 AM on October 19, 2001

yes, the second rule is to not tell anyone, blatant disrespect.

long live the pile.

that rule was broken "long ago." precedence, anyone? also. anyone have a clue what Mick was talking about up there?

No, but I'm curious, and thinking about it makes me feel all funny in my happy place.

At least he could have redesigned the 503 page.

it's a line from clerks just like '36 dicks'

at least it wasn't done by dakota smith.

FilePile wouldn't suck so badly if the server didn't crap out due to too many connections. (come to think of it, the same holds true for MeFi.) And, for the same reason, forget about viewing Mpegs without downloading them first.

Maybe if all you guys just stayed away, it would be better for me.

Interested parties might post a design.

I agree on the top ten pile, and even though the text pile is cool, it just begs "abuse me!", like so
(Warning: read the comments FIRST before deciding if you wanna try file).
