The tears started coming as soon as I saw the shot I knew I would eventually see: Elliott standing forlorn in the forest as E.T.'s spaceship zooms off back to his hooooome. That shot has been breaking my heart for decades now.

It's an interesting experiment, but I think I had the opposite reaction to this to a lot of you: I keep seeing shots I recognize and thinking oh yeah, I remember that being really powerful in the movie, but now that I see it isolated and set side by side with six identical shots from six other movies it looks like maudlin cliché.

Hmm. I've watched Dead Poet's Society, and I'm pretty sure that is not the final shot. The scene from Good Will Hunting is technically after credits start rolling, but I guess maybe that's the final scene. A few of these just seem to be within the last 10 minutes of the movie, rather than the actual final shot, is all I'm saying.

I've watched Dead Poet's Society, and I'm pretty sure that is not the final shot.
It is - I just saw it pretty recently. I remember thinking it was weirdly evocative of The Graduate which brought my brain to an uncomfortable place.

We grabbed this movie second hand this summer, thinking our kids were of an age for it.
End result - our oldest child watched the entire film in a state of heightened anxiety and discomfort - first scared of ET, then scared for ET; our youngest tuned it out; and my wife and I misted up at several points.
Hadn't seen it in years. It's aged quite well, and there were lots of touches and nuances I completely missed as a child.

I really loved this. The juxtaposition between similar endings didn't offend me - it's interesting how similar final shots can be effective in different contexts at the end of different stories.
