3-week old Corgi puppies learning to climb! (SLYT)

One day I will make a post that is not about puppies. Today is not that day.

"That's right. I just spent eight months in the Himalayas to get eight minutes of quality snow leopard footage. What do you do?"

"Corgis. Today I spent about... eight minutes... to get eight minutes of quality footage."

Oh man, the other video I considered posting was an army of golden retriever puppies in a (waterless) kiddie pool and the camera operator had to keep adjusting the angle of the shot in order to crop out the poop corner that was being repeatedly trod upon.

Some days when I'm driving home I drive past a lady walking her Corgi, who evidently owns an array of stylish outfits. One day when it was raining, the dog was wearing an adorable yellow rain slicker, and I wrote a song, the entire lyric of which is, "Corgi in a rain coat." It sounds sort of like Devo.

Also sometimes my wife won't let me put Too Cute on because she can't handle the cute.

My wife is a huge fan of Corgnelius and Stumphrey. We have three cats and are fairly convinced that they would joyfully welcome a Corgi puppy. We're less convinced we have the time to give a puppy the attention she or he deserves. So, instead, we will Squee to this video.

A few months ago we went camping and our campsite neighbors had a dog that was part corgi and part black lab. He was like a black lab from the knees up, personality included, but his legs were well less than half as long as they should have been.

It just seemed so wrong.

I am not a dog person, and my geriatric cats would staunchly disapprove of any pups in the house. Nevertheless, there is nothing like ROLY POLY CORGI PUPPIES to bring on the squee.

Most corgi crossbreeds look like teleportation accidents yes.

Right up there with the German Shepherd/Basset Hound cross my parents once encountered. They were...bemused. Also a little unsure about the mechanics involved in its production.

Those pups are adorable, and I'm not even really a dog person.

I have to hand it to the writers of that show. It must be quite the challenge to have to constantly create appealing variations of the same narrative of lots of babies born, one is the leader, maybe two, and one is the runty one, and just of all these babies doing what trillions of babies have ever done.

My husband has many responsibilities in our house but basically his most important one is curating the internet for me so I get all the most lovely pictures and videos and GIFs. Corgis and red pandas feature largely in this category.

I note that he has posted previously in this thread but I have no yet received word directly from him about the existence of this video. When he gets home, we shall have Words.

And yet, as adorable as these pups are, and as laughable as their woefully short legs are, ... yet an adult corgi can hunt and kill adult raccoons.

Do not piss off a Corgi, if you are under 2' tall. Ever.

Fortunately, baby humans are incapable of this.

You people refusing to do my homework for me made me go look it up myself.

It looks like the gene responsible for the short legs in corgis, dachshunds, pekinese, and basset hounds is a retrogene related the gene responsible for dwarfism in humans. I'm as yet unable to find information about its heritability.
posted by jaguar at 7:19 PM on October 17, 2013 [2 favorites]

Ah ha! Dominant allele with incomplete penetrance. I had to look up "penetrance," but it looks like the allele for shortened legs is dominant, but doesn't always express itself even when present. Which explains why I saw a number of posts on message boards saying they had long-legged corgi mixes.

I'll stop talking to myself now.

You guys!! You guys! Wolf Corgis you guys!

What I love about this one is that the lady clearly has at least one fresh wound on her hand from constant chewing with little needle teefs. But does she care? No. She just keeps on petting the puppies. There's plenty of time later for Neosporin. Right now is puppy time.

Well, my heeler does, but I'm sure she picks up this prejudice from me.

OK, I'm leaving now. No need to give me the evil eye.I can't help it I don't like short dogs. They're just bigger ankle biters is all. I SAID they were cute as puppies.SHEESH!

Uhhhhh, no.

They're a rather recent mix breed developed in Australia--dingo, various sheepdogs, Kelpie, whatever local mutt would herd cattle.

Corgis originated in the British Isles in the early middle ages. Welsh folklore says the corgi is the preferred mount of fairy warriors.

YES! The white marking on the back of many corgis is called the fairy saddle.

We have a full-blooded Corgi and a half-lab/half Weimeraner (sp?) mix and they adore one another. When we let them out, they charge to the back of the yard - Zeus (the biggun) lopes along on his long legs, chewing up the landscape - and Apollo (the one with the Behind of Squeeee) charges along way behind, chugging those stubby legs as hard as he can.

And they chase one another around the yard too. Zeus scampers away and Pollo herds him, cutting angles like a CHAMPION. And when he catches Big Ole Buddy, BOB rolls on the ground and lets Pollo rassle him.

Our six cats don't stand a chance squee-wise.

There is a super-adorable corgi in my puppy's obedience class. Yesterday, the instructor was telling us that corgis are one of the few dogs that are still bred to do the job they were "designed" for, herding.

Actually, his class is full of herding dogs, which is amusing during playtime. Lots of running in packs in a sort of oval formation, and lots of "I'm herding YOU!" "No, silly, I'M the herder here!"
