The problem with Discordians is that they're impossible to tune.

Me: Why is the cat wearing your underwear?
Child: I don't know, man, I didn't do it.

Prohibited fnord.

The license plate on my truck reads FNORD and it has led to some of the strangest conversations.

The most recent was this old goldbug coot I ran into at a trailhead up in the San Juans. It took me a bit to suss out what he was on about, but apparently the government had to mine all this uranium in that area to build a space ship for Elvis, who was to be our intergalactic ambassador. Kennedy was killed because he insisted on using the technology to further the space race and his own anti-communist ends. It took Jimmy Carter to finish the project, and send Elvis off - and President Carter has been rewarded many times over with a long life and great health.

That was a great conversation.

And my wife thinks I'm weird.

Funny, I'm just re-reading Illuminatus! - and boy, has it aged well. I didn't remember the writing being so compelling, and it's completely on-target today.

There was one night when I was 16 and incredibly sleep deprived that I read a printout of the HTML copy of the Principia from start to end. I had read bits and pieces before, but this time I grokked it. I more than grokked it, I truly understood the counterpoint the surrealism of the underlying metaphor of the entire text. I was enlightened.

Then I fell asleep.

When I woke up the next morning, I had lost it all. The Goddess Giveth and Taketh and Doeth whatever she feels like.

The most important thing to remember about Discordianism is Eris throwing the golden apple inscribed "To the Fairest". When you can look upon the Apple and laugh, you will have learned.

I will sometimes wander down to the pigs and toss them an apple while calling, "To the Fairest!" The result is instructive.
