My wife also has the habit, when sitting next to me, of giving me driving directions by pointing. I would never have imagined that peripheral vision should be an important factor in a relationship, but being able to catch those hand signs out of the corner of my eye has avoided a lot of arguments.
Driving a rally car it seems to me you don't have time for a navigator who says "sharp left" and points with his finger "over there."
