What a lot of fun that seems.

I love these things. Best shot was of the big grin on the little boy's face.
I'm always amazed the number of people at an event like this who whip out their phones and watch it all unfold on their tiny screens as if it's not really happening unless they see and record it digitally.

My mom sings this sometimes, except she sings "la la la la na na na na na funiculi funcilua funiculi funicula... na na na na na na na na na na na na la la la la" and then she laughs because she sees that it drives me bonkers. It's like nails on a chalkboard. But now I see it's a really fun song and I'm going to loosen up and cut my mom some slack about it. What the hell, I'll even send her the link!

Not any old supermarket. The John Lewis Food Hall underneath its department store on Oxford St, which is about as upmarket as supermarkets get in the UK. I'd like to see this repeated in Iceland on New Cross Road.

I love the lady at 1:45 who looks none too pleased. There's no sound but it looks like she's telling them to pipe down.

Is John Lewis Foodhall the same as Waitrose or are they different?
posted by Thing at 1:37 PM on February 27, 2014

I think it's run by Waitrose and supplied by Waitrose and got a lot of Waitrose products but slightly different. It's not very big. It has better-than-Waitrose meat and cheese counters, as befits a food hall on Oxford St. It probably doesn't follow Waitrose retail principles and strategy exactly because of the different demands of a food hall.

At least there would be vegetables handy for pelting. Let me shop in peace, assholes.

Waitrose is owned by John Lewis, which is an employee-owned partnership.

"As part of the John Lewis Partnership, all of Waitrose's employees are assigned the title of Partner, co-owners of the business."

Yes, Waitrose wanted to compete with Selfridges and Harrods and Fortnum & Mason's temples to food, so they went "FoodHall". Love that shit though.

Waitrose, the most socially equal business model, with the nicest food, and the best business performance of all the chains. What's not to like?

Always missing from these films: the experience of those who walk into the supermarket just after the performance: a third of those in the supermarket are standing stunned, a third (the performers) are looking nonchalantly normal and the rest are staring at video footage on their smart phones.

I'm pretty sure that's the Waitrose in Chapel Market. (Just around the corner from my place).

What fun to be there for one of those sing-ins.

Ah, sorry, it's on Oxford Street. Missed that bit.

@Optamystic: that definitely is not Chap. At the beginning you can see Food Hall on the worker's apron. The one on Chap is just a (little) Waitrose

Oops, and I missed your sorry. Sorry

This is lovely and fun - probably the only one of these things where I didn't just sit there imagining how victimised I would feel if one of these bodysnatcher horror pranks erupted around me with their cameras.
