This game feels like revenge.
This game feels like revenge for decades of dying in videogames because I am colorblind and therefore could not see what was going on.
Didn't I notice the screen going all red colored? Didn't I know that meant there was a monster behind me chewing on my brain? NO I CANNOT SEE THAT POSSIBLY THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A MORE SIGNIFICANT EFFECT WHEN SOMETHING IS CHEWING ON MY BRAIN I THINK I WOULD NORMALLY NOTICE THAT.
Why did I run into the yellow round thing? Don't I know that the yellow round things are terrible poison and it's the green round things that are powerups? NO THE TWO ROUND THINGS LOOK THE SAME TO ME SORRY.
Oh, I drove the car off the road? PITY THE ROAD AND THE GRASS ARE IDENTICAL TO ME. Oh, I invaded the wrong country? WHOOPS CAN'T TELL APART THE BLUE FLAG MARKER AND THE PURPLE FLAG MARKER. Oh, did I shoot you there, buddy? BUMMER THAT THE ORANGE TEAM AND THE BROWN TEAM LOOK LIKE THE SAME TEAM FROM HERE.
But this? Identifying the slightly lighter gray square in the nest of gray squares? That's easy. Instead of using the impossible difference, it is based on the single difference I use every moment of my life in the real world! That's basically the method I use not to walk into things! I have been training for this game ALL MY LIFE!

I'm using professionally calibrated HP Dreamcolor monitors.
The highest score I was able to get so far was 25 and it led to tears running down my cheeks, a twitching eye lid and nausea, not to mention a near miss on tweaking a neck muscle and a couple of odd looks from co-workers as they watched me bob up and down, left and right, forth and back in front of the monitor like a chicken on crystal meth.
Clearly I chose the wrong career because obviously I am not very good at colors.

forget tilting back and forth, just play the whole game with the screen tilted almost flat, so you're looking across it instead of seeing it head on. easier with a phone or tablet of course.

I kind of want to see the scientific method applied to this now. Control for things like LCD technology (TN/VA/IPS/S-IPS), viewing angle, lighting, distance from screen, age, gender, etc. Obviously there are some people better at this than others, but what does the distribution look like and how much of a role does technology play?

Pretty sure this has a lot more to do with what kind of device you are on than any innate sensitivity. I was maxing out at lvl 26 or 27 on the desktop with its particular lcd screen and a mouse, and immediate went to lvl 40 the first time I tried on an iPad.
But, nice find! I would be cool to see the data generated by something like this, especially if you could aggregate by device/screen type.

I'm starting to think there is a technique to this.
If I defocus my gaze I can spot the odd square more easily I have increased my average to about 30 and have hit 38 once!
Some of the more intense colors make the defocusing rather hard though and I'm clearly doing better with lighter or desaturated colors than with darker or more saturated colors.

Is this something I would need a CGA card to understand?
I kid: 28-36, with better results if I look off to the side (kinda like what variable star astronomers do) to lessen the Purkinje effect. There's a much a stronger red response in the center in the center of one's field of view due to the sharply peaked concentration of cone cells in the center of the retina, and it's particularly noticeable in low light conditions (eg, for the dark colors), when the cones stop being as responsive. As a result, the box you're staring at will seem different from the peripheral boxes (because they're falling on different numbers of cones/rods), and the differences will jump around as you change you gaze. But if you give the whole thing the side-eye, the image will hit your retina where the distributions of rods and cones in your eye is more uniform, and you'll be able to see the slight differences without your eye contributing to the variations.
That's the theory, anyway. For me it made about 6pts difference pretty consistently.

Westringia F., I suspect as much. Also, I found it's getting easier when I reduce the board in size using the browser's zoom. I think my blind spot was getting in the way when I had it too big... it seemed like there was a noisy spot in my field of view where things were shifting around causing false positives.
Though reducing the size of the pattern makes it harder to click on the right square quickly, so there's a trade-off.

So 色狼 actually does mean pervert/lecher.
色—the main meaning of which is colour—is also a sexual marker. If you're very 色, you've got a bit of kinky, lewd or lecherous action going on.
The maker of this game probably went with 色狼, which is brilliantly evocative (the lecherous wolf-man: predatory and ... unsavoury) as a title because of the pun of using the 色 in its primary meaning.
You are the colour wolf, ferreting out the shades that don't match.

How true is the "human beings evolved to see the most shades of green" thing because greens were definitely easier than reds and blues
IIRC, Blue has been theorized to be the most recent color we have learned to distinguish. There was a British Prime Minister in the late 19th century that indexed every color used in the Greek classics, and was puzzled to find no mention of blue at all. The sea was wine-colored, the sky was 'the bronze' to the Greeks. There is a good deal of debate about this, but the absence of a word that specifically described what we call 'blue' in so many ancient languages (Ancient Greek, Ancient Hebrew, even Ancient Japanese and Old Guarani from Paraguay it's said) is rather odd. However, some say that the Greeks defined colors by the lightness of them, not by the hues, and it's more about how they use the language more than the mechanics of color perception.

From monocot's link: "Dugu's surname 'Dugu' (獨孤) is made up of two Chinese characters that literally mean 'single and lonely' when placed together. His given name 'Qiubai' (求敗) literally means 'to seek defeat'. His full name is thus roughly translated as 'The Loner Who Seeks Defeat'. It represents Dugu's status as an invincible swordsman who is haunted by solitude as no one can defeat or equal him in swordplay."
So I guess 你是【孤獨求色】means "You are The Loner Who Seeks Colour".

chambers: The sea was literally, wine-'faced/eyed'.
I'm not colour blind, but I have always wondered why people would strive to interpret that as colour, rather than darkness. To me, the colour of sea at an oncoming storm isn't really striking for it's colour, but it's darkness. Wine is a dark liquid.
So, perhaps all that says is that our culture generally values colour more than shade (except in the above game!), but other cultures didn't, necessarily.
Interesting discussion on wine-faced/oinops here.
It's used in regards to sea, or oxen. I'd be inclined to interpret the latter as wine-eyed, and therefore about having really big pupils, on really big eyes.
