Execution

At least two videos have captured San Francisco police surrounding Mario Woods on the street on Wednesday, then shooting him more than a dozen times, apparently because Woods was suspected in a stabbing and was armed with a kitchen knife, which he did not drop after police had hit him with beanbag rounds.

Police claim that Woods moved towards an officer while still wielding a knife. In the video, an officer is seen blocking Woods' path as he stumbles against the wall. Then he is shot dead by a barrage of gunfire.

SFPD chief Greg Suhr noted that Woods "had already demonstrated, by committing a felony aggravated assault, that he was a danger to others, so he could not be allowed to move away from the scene." San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi responded that Woods did not pose a direct threat. Hundreds of protestors gathered in Bayview last night to honor Woods and demand justice.

Gwen Woods said that her son was struggling with mental health issues, but was trying to turn his life around. He had just picked up the uniform for his new job at UPS.

This post was deleted for the following reason: This looks a horrible situation, but I'm not sure another thread about a police shooting is a great idea right now; there's active discussion in this existing thread and taking this over there would be okay. -- cortex

The video is horrifying.

They go from nonlethal rounds directly to lethal force because firing live ammunition to wound him could let him sue for disability. It's better to move towards him so his attempt to flee allows them to shoot him dead. Much cleaner that way.

And they need to all fire so that there is corroboration for the use of force.

It's like chess.

No justice, no peace.

For Christmas, I'd like to ask Santa for immediate charges for these officers, improved mental health and counseling services for officers suffering from PTSD and for civilians suffering from PTSD because of the actions of officers, nationwide drug testing (including steroids) for officers, a system of independent prosecutors for any case involving police misconduct, mandatory body cameras for every officer, and lives free of worry for people of color who have to go about their business in a world that continues to show and tell them their lives don't matter.

This is like that story out of China that motorists who hit pedestrians, back over them to be sure and kill them, because it is cheaper to bury someone then to mend them. Hell.
