Robot Guard Dogs

Robot Guard Dogs - two new types of robo-dog on their way to market (in Japan) next year from Sanyo (the T7S Type 1 and Type 2) About 3 feet long, 80 pounds of Aibo-style security for $750. Cool factor - their onboard CCD cameras and cell phones can watch for intruders and beam images to your own 3G phone.
Sadly, my Aibo would only recognise a burglar if the burglar was dressed in bright red and hopped up and down in front of its sensors. Early generation, what can I say.
That's an awful lot to expect from a burglar, so I imagine these are quite an improvement.

I picture some poor guy getting a cellphone ring, glancing down, and seeing a grainy image of a blurry foot coming down on the head of robo-pooch. The bark aspect is interesting too swordfish... Maybe they can put together some MP3s of dobermans, etc, allow you to personalize and tweak the level of aggression/malice in the bark.

Is it me, or does the Type 1 look more like a guard turtle?

If a burglar and broke into a house containing one of these robo-puppies, it would be the first thing stolen.
Needs defensive weaponry - nose-mounted stun guns and electrified body armor would be a start.

Wireless video camera by D-Link with motion sensor and auto-email alert is about $450. Emails the picture of the intruder. Doesnt bark.

groundhog, i think you are correct.
i think if they were made to look like a really ugly lamp or shoe that could slowly follow the burgling one it might work better.

Read dogs, much cuter, same price. Better intruder detection system, defensive and offensive bite, and the cuteness level is just off the charts.

"As part of Mr. Lee's good neighbor policy all Rat Things were programmed never to break the sound barrier in a populated area. But Fido's in too much of a hurry to worry about the good neighbor policy. Jack the sound barrier. Bring the noise." -Ng Security Industries Semi-Autonomous Guard Unit #B-782 (Fido)
Real dogs are great, but they top out at, what, 40, 45 mph?
