He's right about one thing, at least. The dwarf is the best, most cracking, character to play.

OMG. I know a guy who has this EXACT attitude towards Heroquest. I didn't realize there was more than one of him in this world.

When I moved across the globe at the age of 12, I was pretty surprised to discover that the US version of the game was pretty different from the AU/UK version—the latter was easier due to monsters have far fewer hitpoints, less powerful magic, and there was a wider array of artifacts for the heroes to use.

Was just sort of silently smiling until he slammed down the third copy of the game at 6:00 and I lost it.

I already know this video is going to be great.

Well, now I have an example video to be able to show when I need to explain the concept of "beardy" as it relates to tabletop gaming.

I remember Heroquest. It was fun, but I'm guessing that this was the UK version mentioned by themadthinker, as it was far too heavily biased in the heroes' favour. Thanks for the link.

I don't recall surviving more than 2 levels of any given attempt at playing through the game. That said, it was fun and I was always tempted by the expansions — which I only ever read about. I still have the miniatures, and they were invaluable when I was able to play D&D during the glory days of 3.x.

Heroquest was awesome, can't help but think Games Workshop's current problems are mostly due to not having easy introductory games/gateway drugs.

His other unboxings are here and while I don't care about comic character statues, I will probably go through a few just to listen to him rant some more.

Yes, please make Gravityland, someone!

I need this guy to talk about Talisman.

brilliantmistake- they're trying, for what it's worth. There was a CEO turnover recently and in addition to...well, not lowering prices per se, but putting together bundles with actual discounts, they've been making some pretty lovely boxed games. There's actually a sorta-kinda Heroquest reboot coming in a couple of weeks called Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower. No one really knows what the rules will be like (probably no in-depth campaign system; if it's like their other new boxes games it'll be a decent distraction) but the models are lovely, with a lot of things Warhammer geeks have wanted since the 90s (bird-Beastmen! Resculpted versions of old Chaos Familiars! Adorable little stabby spider-goblins!).

It's going to be expensive and targeted squarely at the nostalgia market, but it's nice to see them at least put in an effort.

Hero Quest is the perfect gateway experience folks who are interested in tabletop RPGs but not ready or able to commit to an ongoing campaign.

Also, unlike Pathfinder, it's simple enough to be played more-or-less correctly while outrageously drunk.

I'm surprised there aren't more "RPG lite" games like it. Shadows of Brimstone and Descent stand out, they're both worth checking out if you like Hero Quest.

Glad to see Usidore, Wizard of the 12th Realm of Ephysiyies, Master of Light and Shadow, Manipulator of Magical Delights, Devourer of Chaos, Champion of the Great Halls of Terr'akkas (The elves know him as Fi’ang Yalok. The dwarves know him as Zoenen Hoogstandjes. He is also known in the Northeast as Gaismunēnas Meistar.) finally made it through the portal behind the Burger King and really dove into the Earth Stuff.

...unlike Pathfinder, it's simple enough to be played more-or-less correctly while outrageously drunk.
If you stick to Beginner Box rules and content, you can play Pathfinder with young children, who are more similar to drunkards than one might expect.

I haven't done that in a while, though. The "and content" is a sticking point; most Pathfinder modules I've found were too inappropriate for younger kids, and the exceptions were too dull. Heroquest and the D&D boardgames managed to avoid both pitfalls better.

Here in Australia, GW's biggest problem is that their latest batch of "gateway" games - Assassinorum, The Horus Heresy, and Deathwatch: Overkill - range in price from AU$180-$240. And then you still gotta stick the shit together yourself.

Fun fact: a classic Sierra adventure game was originally called Hero's Quest, but it suffered a legal name collision with HeroQuest. The copyright dispute ended with the computer game renamed: Quest for Glory: So You Want to Be a Hero.

I have fond memories of both.

No! The best thing about the Heroquest Video is the NECK BEARD! That's what makes it so great! The authenticity! Without the neck beard? You can't even tell what that is.

But it isn't an unboxing video. As he mentions in the video, it is a reboxing video. I hadn't heard of such a thing before. It turns out there are a handful of other reboxing videos on Youtube, but none so entertaining.

The first video on his channel - maybe the least entertaining - is a video memo from 2012 directed at his Warhammer clan, advising them that he's willing to play Star Wars: The Old Republic, but ONLY as a dwarf, and he doesn't even care if he's a Sith Lord or something like that, he'll be PRETENDING he's a dwarf, and there's nothing anyone can do to stop him.

I had Advanced HeroQuest because I was that kind of teenager. The rather nice gimmick with that was that you had a variety of dungeon tiles rather than a board. There were rules for random generation too, roguelike fans. Also: more plastic Skaven (rat-men) than you could ever need. Good times!

The best thing about the Heroquest Video is the NECK BEARD!

Neck Beards are a bit more clean on the cheeks and chin, closer to Amish than Motorcycle Club. This man is Epic Beard-level. The kind of beard that entitles you to a concealed weapon permit, no questions asked.
