LEGO Pop-up Himeji Castle. Himeji Castle, Japan. According to the creator, he used no adhesives. Several years ago he made a pop-up of the Buddhist temple of Kinkaku-ji (a previously).

The Bellman (in 2009): I hereby decree that no one may ever call anything made of Lego awesome ever again

You take that back!

This is extraordinary. He even has the little public toilet buildings off on the edge of the open space around the main castle tower.

You take that back!

So this is impressive, and much bigger and all. It's a huge achievement and, by any definition, it's awesome, so I guess I take it back. Yes.

But I don't love this as much as I did Kinkaku-ji. Kinkaku-ji was full of absurd detail and it had a strange, rickety charm that's missing here -- maybe just because of scale. And most of all, Kinkaku-ji folded up into a box that looked like a lego box that had a picture of Kinkaku-ji on it! I mean, come on! Style points!

Also look at his Todaji, which he holds half folded so you can see the giant Buddha inside it.

Holy cow, the Todaji one has the parts list and build instructions at the end! Don't think I can afford a Bricklink order for 8816 pieces, though.

Holy shit Im almost more impressed that he mapped out the whole thing in LDraw first.

And yea, the cost of the parts list on something like this is steep. You can estimate the cost of new LEGO sets at about .10 per brick, but that goes up quickly on the secondary market when youre looking for specific colors or relatively rare pieces like a shitload of hinges.
