Do they have any Nesbitt's Lime Soda? A bee flew into my last bottle, and I had to throw it away.

I love Galco's. The article gives short shrift to their sandwiches and their beer/candy/mead/wine collection. Also, the prices tend to be a bit dear, but that's the specialty aspect of it.

They don't show any Nesbitt Lime, but they do have Honey Lemonade, orange, peach and strawberry, so who knows!

"Craft soda" has kind of become my thing. Places like this are cool, but it's becoming more common. Rocket Fizz is a pretty prominent chain, Boylan's is available in most supermarkets, and other brands are available in places like Trader Joe's and World Market.

My top five-plus cherry-flavored sodas:

1. Sprecher Cherry Cola (Milwaukee).
2. Fitz's Black Cherry (Saint Louis).
3. Saranac Black Cherry Cream (Utica, New York).
4. Boylan's Black Cherry (Paterson, New Jersey).
5. Johnny Ryan Cherry (Niagara Falls).
6. Cheerwine (Salisbury, North Carolina).
7. Dr. Brown's Black Cherry (New York).
8. Americana Cherry Soda (Mulkiteo, Washington).

Discuss.

Augh.

In Vancouver I was I living three blocks away from 2 places that sold tons of different sodas. It was amazing! Hasty Mart and then a newly opened Snack Land and they had more stuff than I could ever hope to buy.

Now I'm in Halifax and it seems like my options have been really cut down. There's still Dad's everywhere to be seen but finding stuff like sarsaparilla and jaritos might be really, really tough.

Between this and the donut thread a little while ago I feel like metafilter is taunting me with the culinary cost of my move.

Galco's is the best! Last time I was there, I made a special trip out there from West LA just to see it. The cucumber soda is awesome.
posted by holborne at 9:50 AM on June 1, 2016 [1 favorite]

They also didn't touch on it in the article - but Galco's in the last few years put in a "create your so station with a giant collection of flavored syrups, bottles and a soda machine that pours water at different levels of fizz, so you can really go to town

And yeah, they've naturally got a giant selection of seltzers.

I think they're well positioned to survive the now going gentrification of Highland Park.

Also, this place makes Rocket Fizz feel like candy coated weak tea. (Rocket Fizz is way slicker and has a broader candy selection, but it's missing the weird all out passion of Galcos)

Aww, Galco's is great and I'm glad they're still going strong! I made a pilgrimage soon after learning about them from Huell Howser when he first visited them in 2000. Link goes to a 2008 follow-up that includes footage from his original 2000 visit*.

I hadn't dared to hope, but Galco's had Moxie, which may or may not have literally brought tears to this transplanted New Englander's eyes. They also had Nehi, which for me was like seeing a mythical creature for the first time.

*(Huell Howser's visits to little local neighborhood places like Galco's were one of the only things that put Los Angeles' overwhelmingly huge, sun-baked sprawl into any kind of human scale for me, and I miss him even though I moved back to the northeast more than a decade ago.)

The crazy thing is that Cel-Ray would totally work if it weren't sweetened. A fizzy celery water? Sure! It'd cut the richness of the pastrami on rye much more effectively, and wouldn't taste like evil.

We had an hour to kill between a wedding in Eagle Rock and the reception in Highland Park so chillin' in Galco's drinkin' pop and winding up some rubber band balsa planes in our finery was the obvious answer. Also, if I ride to the ride (rather than drive to the ride) they're usually on the route. It's a good stop for that mountain-top refreshment.

Ah, but maybe you would like it as a mildly sweetening agent?

From David Moo, owner and proprietor of quarter bar in Brooklyn (which I do still have to constantly miss about New York), comes:

The Sea Shandy
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
3 oz cel-ray
fill with a crisp, refreshing Pilsner
in a pint glass with a salted rim

HAPPY SUMMER.

Tarragon soda is super common in Russia and former Soviet states under the name tarkhun (тархун). If you have a Russian grocery store near you they may well have it. It's a super-bright radioactive green color that's almost impossible to miss.

Living in the 'burbs of Oklahoma City, Pops (mentioned earlier) is one of my go-to places. Being a displaced Michigander, it allows me to get some Vernors when I am feeling homesick, along with lots of interesting and quirky pops. Now in Edmond (my suburb of Oklahoma City), another place with a heavy emphasis on pop is going to open, a franchise of Rocket Fizz.

Also, I have seen craft Root Beers / Sarsparillas / Birch Beers from microbrewers and at brewpubs, and can confirm that Abita's Root Beer, which I had for the first time last week, is really good.
