"Sexual pleasure as a theme in heavy metal largely died out with glam, but Type O revitalized the topic by turning the tables on the idea of the male frontman as mere sexual conqueror." Invisible Oranges: Type O Negative's October Rust turns 20.

Nice. Read this on IO last night so it was a pleasant surprise to find it posted here. One of my favorite albums way back in the '90s--I think I bought on release day--and a key entry point into more extreme and independent metal for me.

God damn, how did I not know/remember Peter Steele died?

I haven't listened to this album in a million years. Off to remedy that now.

Oh man, I miss Type O negative. I used to have a job cleaning a church and I would hang out in the dark sanctuary by myself listening to both October Rust and Bloody Kisses.

I didn't know Peter Steele was dead either. I know it's probably silly to be sad about it six years later, and yet...

I'm a little too young to have listened to this when it came out. I'm the right age for it to have been one of the first things I downloaded (slowly, obvs) from P2P services. Anyway this album (and Bloody Kisses) meant a lot to me.

I at least admire Type-O Negative for the title of their compilation, The Least Worst of.

I'm sorry to hear Peter Steele is dead. I didn't know that. I didn't listen to this album much but I do remember the release well because some of my friends were quite happy about it. Around the same time, I also remember him appearing nude in a series of photos in Playgirl. My Type O obsessed friends went kinda gaga over those, but I was kinda surprised this muscular manly goth guy would be in these brooding photos still wearing his dorky digital watch.

"Look at my cock, look at my digital watch" became a big in-joke for us. Said in brooding, doom-y goth voice, of course.

I was lucky to have seen Type O Negative twice in concert and each time was an absolute blast. I still have a few songs tucked away on my car playlist for those days when only Peter Steele can soothe my soul.

A friend showed me that Playgirl spread. Not exactly without consent, he asked me if I wanted to see Peter Steele in Playgirl and I was like okay I suppose I do. But he didn't warn me that it wasn't done in the sort of aesthetic you'd imagine, that it was contextually so jarring, that it sort of looked like this giant dude broke into a random suburban guest bedroom and stole a digital watch and got his shit out, it was so wrong and I remember the physical recoil and just going "no, take it away, I can't see this" but the truth is I couldn't unsee it and I am still a little bit traumatized.
