Weaknesses: BOB.

As we in 2017 prepare for the May release of the continuation of Twin Peaks on Showtime, let's take a trip back to 1991 when Star Pics issued a series of Twin Peaks trading cards.

Featuring cards for major characters (including strengths and weaknesses for each), important inanimate objects and a few things in between, the cards are a pleasant little reminder of fandom tokens and (sometimes incorrect) trivia from a pre-Wikipedia age.

... whoa.

Sometimes I forget what things were like before the Internet, and I never heard about anything. (My grandparents were such huge Twin Peaks fans that we all had to go to the diner for the pie when they visited this end of the country, and there's no way they would've skipped these if they had known about them.)

The cards are hilarious in and of themselves, too. Thanks!

I don't trust people, but people often trust me.

Uh, yeah James, I'm not sure that's your weakness.

Thank you for calling that very specific weakness as I wanted to work it into the post but couldn't.

Dang it - I just realized that I messed up my links, and "weakness" above was supposed to go to Leland Palmer's card, which was where the post's title came from. (That link has been in my "Metafilter Ideas" bookmark folder for at least 4 years, so I've got to call it out.)

Laura Palmer's "strength" could easily double as her weakness... ("I love to try new things!")

MCMikeNamara, if anyone could make me consider giving this Showtime thing the time of day, it's you.

But no.

90s cult shows had trading cards. 10s cult shows have tumblrs. It will be interesting seeing what the official Twin Peaks on Showtime tumblr will look like after May 21st. That's really all I can say.

MCMikeNamara, if anyone could make me consider giving this Showtime thing the time of day, it's you.

It's Lynch's first filmic work since Inland Empire in... 2010?

He's been given nearly complete authorial control over the show by the network.

It's the first time he's been allowed to work in a medium he loves but has broken his heart without major interference.

Most of the original living cast is back, and their reports from set are very enthusiastic.

It has a huge, genre spanning cast, indicating that a large number of actors from different backgrounds are in to what Lynch is putting down.

I guess a lot of whether or not you like Lynch will decide whether or not you're excited about the May reboot.

"from a pre-Wikipedia age"

Pre-Wikipedia, Lynchnet.com was THE BEST resource. Mike Dunn, who ran it, also had an email mailing list devoted to Lynch in the late 90's which I was a proud member of. Some people in Lynch's circle occasionally posted to the list and we got little insights to how Lost Highway was coming along. It was so great.

I don't care for nostalgia and I prefer stories that stay over. Even when I like the work of the person who created it. Even when that person is still in charge. It's a nice thing to have had something you loved and that thrilled you but is gone, like the person you were when you loved it and it thrilled you.

I have absolutely no desire to chase things once they've passed. no matter how perfect the circumstance for their rebirth.

But then I've also never listened to the "new" My Bloody Valentine record because I like living in a world where we just don't know what they will do next to change everything.

In which case it sounds like you don't particularly care to be convinced at all, and no conversation could ever convince you otherwise. It's weird that you're posting in this thread.

It's weird that you think it's not appropriate to say "MCMikeNamara, if anyone could make me consider giving this Showtime thing the time of day, it's you." in a thread posted by a guy named MCMikeNamara about an interesting thing but we're all a little different.

Of course, that is all predicated on the idea that the original series was the whole story.

It's weird no one has commented on that presumption.

I think it's happy happenstance that this current age of brilliant television, including limited series, is happening right at the time to coincide with the statements about the passage of time in the Red Room. I also think that the story was never told to Lynch's satisfaction during the first run of the show, which also was cancelled without finishing its second season. I also think that he's probably had over 20 years to think about what he might do if he could.

I don't think the story we will see soon is one he had planned during the original writing of the show, but I am absolutely sure it is one that fits in perfectly with whatever-the-fuck-it-is that Lynch was doing in Twin Peaks.

Laura Palmer would be 45 if she had lived.

It's really good. I...uh...hrm...might like it better than Loveless.

The lingering question in my mind, paramount above so many others from the original series, is what happened to Josie after she got trapped in that hotel room drawer knob?

what happened to Josie after she got trapped in that hotel room drawer knob?

Strengths: Only with my cooperation can the mysterious contents of this drawer be revealed.

Weaknesses: There is a fish in the drawer, the smell will give it away soon enough.
