A road trip through west USA - This is the remembering of 3,500km journey in west United States in 2013. This [movie] is made of 344,118 Google StreetView images, fetched with some home made scripts and a lot of patience.

Note: it may take a little while to load.

Man, I really need to get out west for a long road trip. When they got past Joshua Tree, I felt like a Russ Meyer movie might break out, or at any time, a pack of Hell's Angels would swarm by.

Well that's great. I wish it had a full soundtrack instead of the one loop.

I applaud the concept... but I found the user interface to be frustrating. I gave up in the first 60 seconds.

Wow. I thought it was going to be a video file like an MP4. But he's just sending one JPG image after another and rendering them to a canvas. I wonder if the creator had hoped they could just pull the images directly from Street View, then realized that they would hit API limits.

If the goal were to make a movie, this would be a strange approach. The time to watch is entirely dependent on your connection speed, and there's no buffering for those with slow connections. But it's definitely a fun experiment, and I like how the nav (waypoints and relative distance) is generated from maps data. Pretty cool find!

(on edit: also I like the concept of reliving a journey without having to install a dashcam ;-)

I don't know if the appropriate people at Google read these things, but this is exactly the kind of thing that should be built into Google Maps. Often I've looked at the street view to try to get an idea of an unfamiliar area I plan to drive through, but the slow 'press, press, press' required look at the drive makes it pretty much useless for this. Google should have a 'make a movie of the route' button so you could then zoom through the movie to get an idea of the drive and what the turns and exits look like before you start your trip--or even just for some virtual site seeing.

They could charge for this--an expanded version of Google Earth or something.

I enjoyed the East California part. There's a new wave coming, I warn ya.

I love how it switches between the forward rear camera views. Took me a few moments to realize that was happening.

Wonder what the effect would be of using the side views...all those streets, houses, stores, people, whizzing past. Or would it just be a blur?

I would like a little map overlay to see the actual route taken. Other than that, neat! And Google should totally make this a feature.
