Yusuf is this year's Lucia at school, as a robot

In Scandinavia, children make a Lucia procession every December 13th. This year Yusuf was able to lead the procession even though he cannot leave his home (Facebook video link) A school teacher and a pedagogue at a special needs school in Copenhagen have a 13 year old student with a genetic mutation that has forced him to stay home in order to avoid infections. Together, they built a robot for Yusuf, so he can not only attend class online, but also go along on school outings and participate in some physical activities.

Unable to attend school, Yusuf sends a robot in his stead

About the FB-video and the radio-show it illustrates, which is in Danish: the teachers asked Yusuf to wish for something he'd really like to do, and he said he would like to lead the Lucia procession. Other students made the costume for him using 3-D design tools, and the radio station Radio24/7 recorded the practice session before the actual procession tomorrow.

My son is in 6th grade and one of his classmates has been using a robot like this because she's out of town for a few months for surgery. The robot is awesome. Even the adults are excited about it.

It's a waldo, not a robot.

It’s not quite up to the technology of the personal transport units in John Scalzi’s Lock In, but getting eerily close.

Paging jscalzi when he's done finishing writing Head On...this sounds right up his alley somehow.

Not just children! At my department (Computer Science at Aarhus University), a diverse and international group of professors, post-docs, and PhD students from the cryptography group every year walk down the hallways candlelit in robes.
