We turn a collective blind eye to the killing of pigs, cows, chickens, turkeys, sheep, lamb, goats and others. We convince ourselves, either consciously or unconsciously, that these animals are biologically inferior creatures to the ones we choose not to consume.
This post was deleted for the following reason: Sympathetic to the main point here, but the framing of this outragefilter piece as an accusation of hypocrisy toward people elsewhere who were getting upset about something a year ago, is a setup for just a really, really weird fight. -- LobsterMitten
Before eating, I thank the growers and the pickers and the shippers and everyone else who brought food to my plate, and thank and apologize to any animals that may be on the menu. I understand this will not mollify the vegetarians (I was one myself for fifteen years). I do this not to justify bad faith in my eating habits, but as a gesture of consciousness and compassion. I know, this doesn't help the poor cow much. Eating less meat and trying to eat animals raised and slaughtered ethically helps a little, but I know I'm still a brute in the eyes of vegans and vegetarians. Arguments between omnivores and vegetarians and vegans and paleo nuts are fruitless (oh...and the fruitarians). People get angry about what other people eat.

The framing paragraph is a bit of a red herring here: the linked article is accusing people of being hypocritical when they get mad about the Yulin dog meat festival because hey, we eat lots of other animals that are just as smart as dogs and cats.
What's more surprising to me is that this article was written last June, with a very specific time context. It seems odd to revisit now, especially with this rather trolling lead.
