I loved this! Put a smile on my face. I think I need to put on some music and dance while doing my dishes aka kitchen party!

Eartha Kitt correcting James Dean at the bar (ballet bar) is just right.

1. Steve McQueen had some moves. Subtle, but definitely hip.

2. Speaking of hip, Paul Newman gots one.

3. Also, a little surprised to see McQueen’s rather modest digs. Until I realized this was 1961, which although it was after his appearance on TV (in Wanted: Dead or Alive) and in some high profile films (The Blob, The Magnificent Seven) it was still earlyish in his career.

Chilling out with Eartha Kitt and James Dean, can you imagine?

If I was a horse and Clint Eastwood started doing the Twist in front of me, I think I'd be trying to slowly back out of the room without making hoof noises.

Walt and Lilly! I've always loved that picture.

This is one of the most joyous collections I've ever clicked on.

I need to see Steve McQueen's home stereo. We see the records, but not the Altecs or Bozacks or Klipschorns that he's probably rocking.

I loved the pile of records on Steve McQueens floor.

I have the Clint Eastwood picture and the Che Guevara picture open in two tabs and I just keep looking back and forth at them.

Picasso FTW. Also I never realized how closely James Dean and Benicio Del Toro (not pictured here) resemble one another.

So Queen Elizabeth was dancing with Nkrumah?

God, imagine a different world - Ghana doesn't face opposition from the World Bank and the global north, Nkrumah's reforms go just a little bit better and he faces less opposition, Ghana leads the world to a glorious post-colonial future, we all basically live in the glittering Afrofuturist-poptimist utopia that briefly seemed possible in the sixties.

Che in a conga line with kindergartners was easily the most unexpected/delightful.

The thing about the Che Guevara picture is it is so unexpected that it seems like his presence caught everyone, including the kindergarteners, off-guard. They were having a dance class and this Latin revolutionary, three times their size, spontaneously appeared in their midst. He was documented with a single blurry photo before vanishing again. Che as cryptid.

Oh, I just needed this today. Except Sly and Arnold at the disco, but I'm feeling generous, and will allow it. ;-)

And this, this is how the past is allowed to survive - lies and master narratives and shadows. I thought the linked essay was just terrific, especially the "This is how people come to believe they have no heroes" part.

Ugh, in any case, why wouldn't someone move closer to the USSR, which - admittedly, for its own reasons - actually wanted non-colonial powers to succeed? Anyone who wasn't just in it for themselves would do exactly the same thing.

I think regular people just danced together more and sang together more in those days.

Both Johnson girls were always portrayed as being kind of dorky at the time so it delights me to see Luci Baines Johnson more than hold her own with Steve McQueen.

The large percentage of those photos are publicity stills, not snapshots. Inside Studio 54? Photo repped by UPI? Not casual.

For one, why all these people got their shoes on in the house?

For two, who's in their houses taking these pictures?
